Domestic Well Rehabilitation Grant

just wondering if anybody has got well works done latley. The pump at my dads kicked it in, due to high Iron in the water. It was on the way out and finally gave up the day the water was to be tested. This was unfortunate as the sample had to be taken from Kitchen tap.

I see on the application you need to get three quotes for remedial works and they pick the most appropriate. How does that work? Do three companies call out to assess? Do they work of photos and details of the pump that was installed? Just thinking that they know they've probably about 1 in three chance of getting the job! I was going to engage with a few companies tomorrow but just so I know what to expect.

You need 3 quotes but you get to pick who does the work, I had a fair bit of difficulty getting 3 companies to quote so just keep looking. You will need to get the water tested before by the company doing the work so they know what water treatment system to put in and after the works you need a certified lab test done by a lab the council have listed. If all goes good they send someone out to inspect the works done and if it passes you should get 85% of the costs refunded.

You can only avail of this once every 7 years so check if a council grant was given recently. You can also get a new well bored every seven years with the same 85% grant of works being available from the council.

Yeah the issue currently is that there's no way to get the water tested as the pump isn't working, I believe they had to test it from kitchen tap. I can do the rehabilitation grant without it I'm guessing but would need it for the €1k treatment grant.

Did each company come out to look at it in order to quote? I had paid €250 for an independent water test for him, so unsure how that works if I can't test from kitchen tap because obviously it makes snese to have the results before starting the works.

Yeah he didn't get a grant for over 20 years since the well was drilled so he's ok in that respect. Thanks for reply.

Only the company I went for came out, the other 2 just sent a quote without seeing the site. I'm sure whichever company takes on the work will be able to get the water tested before putting in a new system somehow. A water test shouldn't be that expensive though. I only paid that for the council test but have done other tests costing around €125.00 for basic tests. The grant isn't €1000.00 it's 85% of total costs refunded. Mine cost €1200.00 for the system so I got €850.00 back but had to pay for the water testing on top.

I tried to get the well sorted out about two years ago. Work was needed on the well itself as well as pump, filters, UV etc. Spent days on end waiting around for people to come out to see what needed to be done but they didn't show. Everybody I spoke to, without exception, said, "Nah, you need a new well. We'll dig a well for you, get a grant, sorted." Could not get three quotes because they wouldn't quote for the work that needed to be done, just for the digging of a new well.

I ran out of patience so I half-arsed some of the work myself. Absolutely miserable job, took ages, but it worked out ok.

It was the same for me 2 years ago, took forever to get the quotes. Nobody was overly interested in doing the work but I eventually got 3 quotes after a couple of months hounding companies. It was the exact same recently when I needed a new well bored, found it near impossible to get 3 quotes so the council seriously need to sort the process out to make it easier for people.

The treatment grant is 100 % up to €1000 I thought and refurbishment 85% up to €3k.

Where are you based? I'm just wondering if anybody has recommendations for people who would quote in north Westmeath, rathowen area.

Southwest Meath, you are correct in the 100%. I just checked the council site and they say,

"Treatment works : 100% of the approved costs for works that, in the opinion of the housing authority, are necessary to treat the water to meet the water quality standards specified in the Regulations, subject to a maximum grant of €1,000"

So because mine was over €1,000 that's why I only received 85% back I imagine.
