⚠️ Have opened a thread to keep posts on Sundays weather together , the models over the last couple of days have increased the rainfall amounts from the LP system moving across the south of Ireland, a lot of rain to fall in a relatively short space of time, am seeing parts of the south could get 30mm alone in less than 10 hrs.

Windy and blustery overland getting up to around 70 km/h in parts accompanied by the rain but not as much a problem, quite windy along southern coastal areas getting up to around 80km/h.

Local flooding must be a distinct possibility especially in areas prone to it. Some of the rainfall could be convective in nature giving intense local rainfall.

Some very big totals showing up on the Hi res models. Higher ground like the Knockmealdown Mts showing as getting over 100 mm in less than 24 hrs and the Blackstairs Mts look particularly heavy along with Wicklow Mts also and parts of Wexford could get up to 70 mm. Widespread areas in the maps below showing over 40mm to 60mm.

Gfs continues with the torrential rain tomorrow. I still think the wind will be more of a factor than Met Eireann suggest, especially for the far South!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 308 ✭✭ascophyllum

Lol @JanuarySnowstor you must have work or an event you're trying to get out of, you're willing this little system to do its worst. The strong winds will be an unwelcome shock on the East Coast, the rain shouldn't be too problematic as soil is quite unsaturated everywhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,166 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

East of Ballymacarbry is Comeragh Mountains and west is the Knockmealdowns. There are houses just to the northwest of the marker at the bottom of that mountain. I would not risk going up the comeraghs tomorrow if those values are anything to go by.

A lot of us just enjoy extreme weather, this is unlikely to cause many issues because as you said the soil is not saturated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,166 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Yes the soil not being saturated is indeed a fair point!! Something to follow anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 477 ✭✭Robwindstorm

I have to agree with the guys. Not sure what soil conditions are like down south, but the east has experienced drought conditions with river levels very low. The 50 ml that fell here in Meath last Thursday has disappeared quickly. Along hedge and tree lines, the grass is parched. The big problem will be surface flooding with leaves blocking drains and culverts. Also the strong onshore East winds affecting Cork, Waterford and Wexford etc is another problem, not sure about tides?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,166 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Tides are about 3.7m in Cork tomorrow. Not too bad

I remember when I was young, they wouldn't try to scare people with the weather.

It was just wet and/ or windy.

Now it always sounds like the apocalypse.

Reading the posts above was thinking that sometimes dry firm ground can actually cause flooding when the rainfall is heavy enough as it runs off without having time to soak in.

Interesting the model below showing min, max and probable rainfall accumulation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,166 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

If that's not an orange wind warning am not sure what is!! Expect some wind damage across the South with trees in full leaf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,735 ✭✭✭Rougies

Looking at high res models from this evening it's low end orange for immediate south coastal areas at worst. I don't think it warrants an upgrade of warning levels (yet).

Interestingly though, the forecast gusts don't even come close to orange at any stage, even out to sea. It's more of a sustained wind speed event.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Yeah overland barely a yellow wind warning, coastal yellow level but no orange I reckon. Of course combined with the heavy rain would make it a bit more pronounced .

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

    Latest output about the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,604 ✭✭✭typhoony

I think it only just warrants a yellow warning.

After a relatively calm start, wind ramping up in Greystones. Gust 32 knots at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,096 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Currently, 8am, north waterford - exactly on the purple spot on the above maps (I know its not for now) not a drop of rain, quite breezy. 8.20 just a few spots.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 4,483 Mod ✭✭✭✭mickger844posts

Wide open to South East winds here at my location in Waterford City. Currently a Max gust of 58km/h recorded with rain just starting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,096 ✭✭✭✭looksee

North Waterford, 9am. Strong winds, minimal rain.

I have seldom seen the Suir so low in Clonmel it can absorb the water. The problem is that intense bursts will overwhelm the drains and culverts. I won't be venturing south of Clonmel today.

Southeast of Gorey, windy for the last 2 hours, plenty of clouds rolling across the sky but no rain yet. .ME App thinks it's raining here but it's not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,011 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Dark with heavy rain in Galway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,248 ✭✭✭pad199207

Fully expecting our rain shadow here in Kildare today.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,453 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Gusting 37 knots now in Greystones. Sun has made a brief appearance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,096 ✭✭✭✭looksee

North Waterford 10am. Windy, some rain, not heavy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,332 ✭✭✭webpal

why wouldn’t this be a named storm?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,401 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

West Galway. Breezy with patchy rain.

2.9mm at Mace Head so far today. 0.4mm at Athenry.

    Cork Airport showing 20.8mm already.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,357 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

in Killarney at the moment and it’s bucketing down…floods already I’d say

Not raining in Galway now. Radar showing it to be mainly a Kerry/Cork/Waterford event so far. As predicted.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,166 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Indeed it's very local, but worth bearing in mind those 3 counties have a combined population of 700K. Folk forget the South Coast contains the real capital 😆

Quite wild here now, most certainly low orange wind. Cork safety alerts are reporting trees down all over the county

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,096 ✭✭✭✭looksee

North Waterford, noon. Now its raining. Not apocalyptic but fairly heavy.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Windy here near Tralee, mainly dull overcast with intermittent rain / lighter skies, 5mm in the manual gauge so far but only expect about 10mm or thereabouts in total here today. Wind gusts haven't reached Yellow warning criteria yet at the stations on the coasts.

Edit: 90 km/h in last report from Roches Pt

There is a 'bit of rain' in Dublin at the moment. But nothing to get excited about. Does the ME pyramid still leak?

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Very wet and windy now, North Wicklow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 319 ✭✭almostthere12

44mm recorded so far for this event…..south of Cork city

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,166 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Very heavy now in Cork Area. I'd say next 2 hours is the peak of the rainfall here!!

I'm just north of you (south Dublin) and there's been little to nothing to report so far. A little windy, and even less rain. I was looking forward to a bit of an event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,248 ✭✭✭pad199207

Blue Skies here in Kildare but blustery

Rain and gusting 45 knots now in Greystones.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 4,483 Mod ✭✭✭✭mickger844posts

The windiest day of the year at my station in Waterford City with a Max of 76km/h recorded. South East winds always seem the strongest at my location. Rain 17.5mm so far and still hammering down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,511 ✭✭✭secman

Steady rain since just after 12:30, gusty winds too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,166 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

So coming into the evening here now and it looks like the warnings were just about right. Nothing too severe but notable as the first bout of bad weather this Autumn....Still raining here as it has been all day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,199 ✭✭✭yagan

Damp and blustery, no real punch in the wind although there's a flowers few pots fallen over.

    We will rebuild.

    Cork Harbour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,864 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Not too bad in clare. Was expecting worse. Seemed to break up as it was passing through this area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭beggars_bush

Barely a drop of rain all day

    Blustery though, especially this evening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,358 ✭✭✭jimbis

Waterford looks to be getting a pasting now judging by the radar.

East coast looks in for some heavier rain later. Been a miserable wet day in South dub but nothing out of the ordinary.
