What type of machine does everyone have?

Apologies if this is asked every week. I don't see it on the first two pages anyway!

My coffee machine broke so I'm deciding what's next. I had one of those ones you just add ground coffee into and it filtered the water through the coffee into a jug. It was grand as I could buy any type of ground coffee.

I'm half thinking of maybe getting one of those pod ones but they seem to really limit your options on what and where you buy and how much you spend. So I'm not so sure but the Tassimo ones seems popular? The ones that are like the barista ones are probably a nuisance to clean so possibly i'm back to my same style again.

What does everyone else and are you happy with it? Is it low or high maintenance?

    thanks!

What type of coffee do you prefer to drink?

I had all sorts of machines over the years, some very expensive but my preference in the last long while if a simple black filtered coffee so I use a simple bodum cafetiere, and I've a good grinder. Don't need anything other than that really…

I have a Sage Barista and I love it. I've had it for about 3 years now and not had to do much maintenance on it apart from replace the water filters every few months and run the de-scaler solution through it. Coming from a pod machine or a drip machine its night and day in terms of taste, the bean to cup machines need a bit of setting up but once you have that nailed they are pretty consistent.

I have a Breville Barista Max+ for the last 2 years or so. It's fine, but I find it very inconsistent. I weigh the beans before putting them into the grinder because the display on the grinder is useless, but even then some shots it pours in about 24 seconds, some 36 seconds (literally 2 hours later, same beans, same grind setting). It can flow slowly, or quickly, or it can splutter half the time.

I'm actually very tempted by the Ninja Luxe Cafe and have been trying to decide whether or not to go for it. Reviews are relatively mixed-to-positive, seems to do a lot of things but doesn't fully excel at any of them, but it's still a decent enough machine if you're not massively particular about your coffee. But it should help with dialling in because it recognises and measures the extraction and can recommend different grind settings.

i have a sage precision brewer. Drip/Filter brewer. Grind beans each morning and make about 1 litre. I find it a lot nicer than americanos and the coffee has a lot more flavour.

A kettle, a tin mug and a fine strainer. I grind in a grinder if I'm not using ready-ground. I manage temperature and ratio. Brew and strain. No machine needed!

    Hurray for sustainability.

We have a Melitta Aroma Elegance filter machine, my wife uses it daily.

I just use a Clever Dripper and an Aeropress.

I just usually drink americano and add my own milk of choice. I can't say the coffee tasted amazing from my last machine and I struggled to manage the strength but I did like being able to make a big pot.

Looks amazing! Just a little out of my price range unfortunately.

Rocket Appartamento and a 1Zpresso JX Pro manual grinder for work.

Moccamaster, think I woud potentially go with a bean to cup if buying again but I couldn't resist the allure of having a literal giant pot of coffee in the morning.

They are forever for sale second hand for about 200 or thereabouts. A fantastic machine for that kinda money

my wife got a delonghi bean to cup jobbie in lidl a few years ago - i think they were €200; when i looked it up they'd been discontinued but had been retailing at about double that beforehand.

Rancilio silvia with PID and pulsor silencer on the pump

Have an itch to upgrade to a

But the Silvia keeps going. (17 years), changed element and pump

    Rancilio silvia here too.

Great machine. But unless you enjoy playing around/experimenting etc you might want something a bit more straight forward.

I've got a Delonghi Dedica. Can't fault it and it's nice and compact for worktop.

4kwp South East facing PV System. 5.3kwh Weco battery. South Dublin City.

I've a Delonghi Magnifica S bean to cup for about 3 years now. Previously had pod coffee and as said before it's night and day. It's not too bad for maintenance. Water fill about every 7-8 cups. Grinds remove about every 15 cups. Re-fill the bean hopper every 25 cups. De-scale every 3 months but that's not a big job, just takes 3 or 4 refills and empties.

+1 on the Rancilio Silvia with a PID here. Hasn’t missed a beat in 4 years. Still though I’m always itching for an upgrade at some stage.

started with a lavazza pod machine, that broke. then got a Siemens EQ500 - bean to cup from amazon warehouse - one button option. easy to work, easy to maintain and makes decent coffee

also got a Sage Bambino Plus and Sage Grinder Pro on adverts to start learning manual earlier this year - kids are more advanced than me but they are working/looking for work in cafe's / restaurants so they practice more.

either way, i get decent coffee. rarely buy coffee out and about now.

Another Rancilio Silvia here (with PID). I've owned it for 6 years, but it had a good life before I bought it. Also have a Mazzer Super-Jolly grinder that I fixed-up and converted to a single shot doser (also enjoyed a good life in a cafe before I got my hands on it), and a Behmor 1600 roaster that also had a previous good life.

    Hurray for sustainability!

I've had all shapes and sizes over the years and have gone back to a simple filter machine in the past 3 years. I realised the machines were all hype and the filter gave me the taste and strength I wanted.

For espresso - La Spaziale S1 Mini Vivaldi II (11+ yrs) paired with a Eureka Zenith 65E grinder (10 yrs). I started out on a Gaggia Classic for a couple of years followed by a Rancilio Silvia which served me and then a family member well for years.

For filter - a Chemex 6 cup paired with a Mahlkonig Vario for 15+ yrs.

If you end up investing in an espresso machine then you should expect maintenance - regular cleaning of all parts and likely a pump and or gasket to replace over time.

    Quickmill Pegaso:

Very reliable, despite being second hand. Had it about 8 years now.

Lelit Elizabeth and Niche zero for past 3 years. First machine and great experience so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,857 ✭✭✭drury..

Forgot there is also a la Pavoni Euripicolla, once grind is set it makes fantastic coffee and the best milk.

You'd never burn your mouth on the results though
