When should the first timing belt be changed on a Nissan NV200 1.5 Diesel 192.

A guess would be 90 to 100k. What's the mileage on it?

Why guess on something so important to an engine?

That is the Renault 1.5DCi engine and some have lower replacement intervals

than others. All depends on the engine code. This comes straight from a guy

I work with that was over Warranty for Renault Ireland. He drives a Dacia Duster

and his son has one too. Both have 1.5DCi engines and have different timing belt

intervals believe it or not. Have a look in your book pack if you have one or if it

was me I would email Nissan Ireland or a dealer, that way you have it in black

    and white.

I always get it done a little earlier just incase. If that goes yr engine is gone.get the water pump done aswell because if that collapses it can knock off your belt.

I once got timing belt and water pump done and I got a faulty water pump. It collapsdd after 6k.

Its very rare for that to happen but it does. Timing belt held on by millimeters. Swore after that day I'd never spend big money on a car again. I'm cursed with them.

Stating the obvious here but you should have a service book with detailed information on required servicing. I have this with a Megane 1.5 DCi and the timing belt interval for it is 160k kms. Different models have different intervals though. A van might need the belt doing sooner due to an expectation of harder use.

If you ask a garage, very likely that they'll try to sell you a lower interval. Like asking a barber how often you need your hair cut.

I've never had a timing belt snap but what I have had are problems after timing belts and associated parts were replaced (incl by main dealers) as part of routine maintenance. E.g. water pump not leaking, changed, new pump leaking. Similar story with a crank oil seal, that error caused the car to dump the majority of its oil out while driving. Also, I suspect that some garages are making errors with tensioning belts and that this can be a factor in belt breakagaes and water pump failures but because it takes a while for problems to show up, it's not possible to pin them on the garage.

I have the same engine in a 182 Kadjar, just 90K KM on it and last service the main dealer said timing belt needed to be done because its 6 years old, quoted 750 for it, would bring it to an independent before giving up that cash.

Was he telling the truth ?

There is generally a year stipulation as well. It's 6 years for my 1.5 DCi so he probably is telling the truth. After 6 years and 90k kms, I'd probably get it done on a newish car like that. If it was an older car and/or it was doing very low mileage, i'd probably stretch it out. I have some Renaults that do low mileage and have 20+ year old timing belts that haven't snapped yet :)
