    Hi

Should have my trade papers as pipefitter next April. Thinking of heading to Canada for the summer as i hear work slows down for the winter there. Anybody any tips/advice if i do decide to head over? Ill be 30 when heading over and hoping to get the working holiday visa.

Which part of Canada are you considering? Alberta (the oil & gas industry) would probably be the best bet for your trade. It's quite busy right now but cost of living is fairly high. Join the "Irish in Calgary" and "Irish in Edmonton" Fakebook groups and you'll probably find what you're looking for there.

Thanks for youre reply @el diablo. I know very little about Canada only i wanted to go to Saskatchewan nearly 10 years ago to do a harvest season there but the mate i was supposed to head over with fell in love before we could organise anything. Id imagine most of the work is on FIFO/DIDO type sites i.e. remote mines and refineries where you would be accomodated so that would help with the cost of living in some ways anyway. Just wondering can you do fifo from vancouver or just calgary or what way does it work?

If you go to a fly in-fly out job in Alberta you'd most likely fly from Calgary or Edmonton. Otherwise you'd drive or carpool to site. Food, accommodation etc would all be provided usually on these type of job. Very few jobs would have flights out of Vancouver unless it's a major project. Cost of living in Vancouver would be very high.
