The sun is splitting the stones this morning at RCD. Is there no footage on TV/SKY?

Think coverage might start at 12.30 on the + coverage on sky, and at 1 on the main feed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭big_drive

    1 o'clock I think also on Network 2

Would love to know the logic in sky showing reruns of last weeks golf over live golf this morning.

    Blows my simple mind.

I'm dying to see the course in sunshine and watch S.Power plod his way through it 😔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭big_drive

It's the same most weeks. Except for majors really. I think it's fair enough to be honest, doubt there would be very large viewing figures first thing on a Thursday morning with a lot of the bigger names not on course yet

Not too many big(ger) names in the Irish Open anymore. Now only a nondescript tournament full of names no one has ever heard of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭Deep Thought

depends how much golf you watch.. I remember watching Fowlers first tournament where they even got his name wrong and watching a young amateur making his way that no one reall knew Called Hovland. If you don’t watch it then you never know who is playing.

A lot of smaller names become bigger names..

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

Oh right -I get it. The stars of tomorrow are gathered for our delectation at RCD. Wonder will we spot the future major winners among their ranks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭big_drive

I'd rank this weeks field as very decent, lots of well known faces

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 428 ✭✭REFLINE1

100%, its a strong field. TBH I think people forget how immensely talented even the non household name guys are that are teeing it up here.

    ….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 428 ✭✭REFLINE1

Thats only true if you don't follow golf outside of watching the majors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,978 ✭✭✭RoadRunner

Unless I'm mistaken the Irish open is the highest strength of field of any DPtour event this year since the dubai desert classic opener of the year.

edit: Maybe the scottish was higher, but that's not showing up on my listings here as it was a joint pga/dp venture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,310 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Possibly but more ranking point's available this week in the Procore, so you're never going to get many of the top players to come and play.

I don't think there's anywhere else I'd prefer to watch other than what's commonly considered the best course in the world chewing up the strongest DP field of the year. RCD is brutally tough, enjoying this.

Will Royal County Down ever have a reasonable prospect of being a host venue for The Open?

What are the main reasons against? I imagine infrastructure / I.e. lack of direct train service / apparent lack of hotels (although I can’t see Portrush / Portstewart being too much ahead of Newcastle on this area) . Is there an issue with the course / venue itself , in terms of room for grandstands and footfall etc?

live locally and am enjoying the sights and colour. Perhaps someone with more expertise could enlighten me! TIA!!

Outstanding round from Sean Keeling as a 17 year old amateur to shoot -1 given how some experienced lads struggled out there today. 17 pars and one birdie is some consistent golf

I was up at it today, few showers around lunchtime. Even with the sun out it was quite cool. Amazing course though and great to see some quality golf too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭Pat_bottom

    Hope this is alowed.

I have 3 tickets for Sunday for the Irish open I can't go myself now so if anyone on here wants them and will actually use them I'll happily transfer them to someone. You need to have a dp world tour account for me to transfer them too as a screenshot isn't accepted I don't think.

I don't want any cash it's not a sale it be a shame to waste them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,658 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Would that not be the definition of a bigger name? Those who are recognised by even the casual viewers? So the point stands I would say.

For casual fans it wouldn't be a big field but for most golf fans that follow it on a weekly basis it's still a very good field. I could be wrong but I think it's peak years were a few years ago when it was on before the Scottish open if memory serves me correct.

Del Rey with a horrible last few holes there.

I'd love to take them if available. Bring my 2 sons up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭Pat_bottom

Yeah for sure that be lovely mate. If you sign up for the dp world tour account then send me on your email you used to sign up with via pm I'll forward on the tickets to your account mate.

Travelling up tomorrow too. If anyone has knowledge on the Park + Walk setup let me know, we're hoping to get there by 8am latest to get a spot in there instead of the P+R.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭AyeGer

Edit, sorry I didn’t realise you were referring to the park and walk.

But for anyone using the park and ride - As you approach Newcastle you will see the yellow signs directing you to the park and ride. People there guiding the cars into place and then the buses are parked beside the parking area.

Newcastle is only a small place anyway, no danger of getting lost.

Brilliant opening eagle from McIlroy on the 1st. Moves him into a share of the lead with Manassero and Hill on -6.

Used it on Thursday. Not too busy probably a 15-20 mins walk to the course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,024 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

That flop shot off a tight lie by Brown was unreal. Commentators didn't even acknowledge it! Holed the putt aswell, some up and down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That's some birdie by Rory on 13, when he looked like he would be lucky to make bogey after his tee shot. Sank a putt from around 35 feet.

Makes up a little for only making par on the par 5 12th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Rory hacking his way around the 18th par 5. His 4th shot was very good though and should rescue his par.

Ah #### sake, he missed the putt from around 4 feet. Very poor effort, but he should still be in a share of the lead, and will definitely be in the final group. Only Manassero can potentially regain the lead, he's 1 behind walking up the 18th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,248 ✭✭✭hold my beer

Only 8 of 68 under par for today. Poor old Clements, 14 under. From 1st to 4th last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Looking at the leaderboard this morning, I see Clements right near the bottom. That's some turnaround, from leading after the first round, to just 1 behind in joint 2nd after the 2nd round, then disaster.

I didn't realize yesterday was so bad. Yikes!

It's been said a million times but this place looks unreal on TV. Cinematic. What's the main reason for no Open Championship.,difficulties with grandstand placement and getting enough spectators onto the course? The spectators seem very close to the fairway in places this week. Or is it the external infrastructure, no railway etc.

If Rory wins today, expect a lot of discussion on this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Birdie for Rory on the par 5 1st, moves him to -7. Manassero makes his birdie as well, to remain 1 behind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Savage 2nd shot approach from Rory on the 2nd hole. Spins it back to within around a foot, leaving him with a tap in birdie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,040 ✭✭✭✭tayto lover

Manassero is not the type to just disappear. Rory will seriously have to fight for this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Commentator: "Let's catch up with Erik van Rooyen."

Immediately cuts to an ad break. There was 6 and a minutes since the last break. 😠

It comes back and it has to play catch-up on Rory's next tee shot. It was the same for Rory's previous tee shot as well.

We didn't get to see it but Manassero made bogey on 4, so he's now 4(-4) behind Rory(-8). Smith has moved into outright second on -5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,248 ✭✭✭hold my beer

The ads have been brutal all weekend. RTE are awful at live golf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Tell me about it. 7 and a half minutes this time between breaks.

Rory drops his first shot of the day on 7. I don't know if you can fault him. He got a horrendous kick on his tee shot, landed to the right of the green, but ended up off the green on the left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Rory's missed a relatively easy birdie putt on 8. That's 2 shots needlessly coughed up on the last 2 holes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,488 ✭✭✭boardise

Not an easy watch, Rory, these days.

Basically , apart from Brown and ,at a stretch Hojgaard, the others are throwing this at him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Excellent approach from Rory on the 9th sets up another birdie opportunity. He should get it, but you never know with him. Putting has always been the weakest part of his game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Ah, you can guess. He missed it. Shocking. It was a straight putt from around 5 or 6 feet and he catches the right edge of the cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,088 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Rory makes birdie on 11, his first birdie since the 2nd hole. He got a good read from Manassero's birdie from 40 foot.
