Virgin Media bundle advice

    Hi folks,

I'm reviewing my elderly parent's Virgin Media account and seeing if there is a better deal for them. I realise I can talk to an agent (will do this) and go through the options, but I just want to have an idea of what I'm talking about first. I don't find the website particularly helpful, and I'm not a customer of Virgin.

Their bill states that they're on a fixed account bundle, which they began over a year ago. It includes 250Mb Broadband (I think that's automatically going to 500mb this month) + Virgin Media Bigger TV. They've also got a landline (Home Phone World Talk) subscription as part of the bundle. €114 per month. I'm not sure how long it's fixed for, but as they were getting a second box (Bigger TV Mini) for half price for a year, I'm guessing a year(?).

So my question is…can the broadband, TV and phoneline be treated as separate/chop and change within their bundles? (e.g. drop the phoneline and/or change the TV package). I have looked, but like I said, find the website a bit useless for getting an idea of options for existing customers.

    Many thanks.

Broadband is essential the rest is optional.Select what tv bundle you wish to order and discuss landline which is included at no extra cost

If they have main box at least with a hard drive then you don't want to upgrade (yes even if it's a horizon) to a newer box.

Sounds like they might have 360 box and not the streaming small apollo box.

Recording limitations they really could do without with apollo box.

Your parents are paying way too much for their bundle with Virgin Media. You can get a bundle of Broadband+Landline+TV from Eir for €44.98pm. With Eir, you can also add extra rooms without any additional monthly fee if you buy the additional boxes outright. (They even sell refurbished Apple TV boxes on their eir Store site for €59.99 to facilitate this). Your parents could also add mobile SIMs to the bundle for €9.99pm each, if required. Landlines are basically free in most bundles, so taking landline out won't decrease the cost. Even if you don't want to move operator, you should be able to ask Virgin to match the €44.98 from Eir, and threaten to move if they don't. All the new services from different providers use streaming boxes rather than hard disk boxes. Your parents are likely to have to migrate to a streaming box sooner or later, so it is probably better if they get used to it sooner. Recording capabilities are more limited on all the streaming boxes, but switching between different services such as Netflix, RTE Player etc is much easier on the streaming boxes.

"switching between different services such as Netflix, RTE Player etc is much easier on the streaming boxes" - as far as Virgin is concerned I would disagree it's basically the same - 360 or apollo but with apollo as your main box you have the recording limitations.

Compare both to a Horizon box and your living on another planet. I would agree on the cost being too much. Big Tv would be cheaper than Bigger Tv but you would loose some channels - CNN I think for one.
