I've a chip and crack in the the windscreen which will need to be replaced. Mr Windscreen and Allglass (ie Autoglass) are the two approved repairers for my insurance company. Any opinions on which is better to use?

Whichever you choose, make sure they use the OEM specific windscreen, even if you have to pay a bit extra. I had one replaced some years ago and it was visibly worse quality than the original. The curvature wasn't smooth, and you could seen rainbow patterns across and area of it.

I used Allglass recently on a car less than three months old. Heated windscreen, proximity sensors etc. They did a terrific job, checked calibration of sensors etc. It's like new. I'd highly recommend them.

Had Autoglass do a windscreen and seperately a door window, was happy with both jobs. They were also on my insurers list of approved repairers.

I think it boils down to the individual fitter rather than company. Like any job some people are better than others at doing it.

I had a windscreen replaced through my insurance by Mr Windscreen. When I got the car back I noticed the rear view mirror was mounted about 75mm lower than where it used to be. Went back to them & on investigation they discovered that the windscreen was not to specification. They replaced it with a correct spec screen. I had to wait about a week for them to get the correct spec screen as all their stock was to the wrong spec. Apart from that it was a good job.

As above request OEM glass, it will cost your insurer a bit more but cost you nothing. Optics are bound to be better than a lot of the cheap Chinese glass.

I agree OEM glass only, and it does come down to the specific fitter as said

I requested an OEM screen from Autoglass. Turns out, even though my policy states there's no limit if I use an aligned repairer, that only applies to generic screens - if I want one from BMW, they want to charge €535 :(

Called Aviva about this and they confirmed this is the case. I read the guy the wording on the policy (also pointed out that the spiel they give you while waiting to connect to someone also states you won't have any additional cost if you use an aligned repairer). No dice. Unfortunately I don't have time to fight them on it but if it's not right, I'll keep going back to them

I got a windscreen replaced recently and Allianz covered the full cost for a manufacturers specific screen. It took a while for it to arrive but that was fine with me.

Similar happened my husband on his BMW. Windscreen replacement was absolutely dreadful and he had requested an OEM replacement but they just went ahead and ordered generic because apparently once people find out they have to pay for OEM they say no.
