Skoda DPF replacement cost

Would anyone have a ballpark figure how much it might cost to replace the DPF on a 2014 Diesel 2ltr Octavia?

My warning light has come on a few times recently so I am worried it is on the way out. Sending the car to the mechanic later in the week but trying to get an idea in my head what kind of a bill I will be looking at or if I should be looking into trying to change the car completely (its soon due 4 tyres aswell)

Do you need to replace it? My car was due DPF change and it was taken off and sent off to be cleaned, there are chemicals that will remove the soot/ash build up and its probably cheaper than getting the whole thing changed. Google dpf cleaning and see if any place could help.

Depending on your car there is sometimes a need to update the computer to tell it the DPF has been replaced - the warning light you have could be based on criteria rather than its actually clogged up. My car calculates how much ash is being created based on engine running and time etc but in reality it could be lot less..

Is your car having performance problems? Bad fuel economy? Low power? Does the light come on when accelerating? There are a couple of sensors usually one before and one after the DPF and if the difference of pressure is excessive a car will throw a DPF issue - this usually means it could be getting close to being blocked.

Agreed, around €2,000. Have you not considered getting it cleaned or mapping it out? Or using some DPF cleaner and driving on the motorway? Replacing it would be extremely foolish.

And you don’t need to change cars because of tyres and a blocked DPF

Yeah of course I will be looking into cheaper options 1st I just wanted to get a ballpark on replacing it as what I can find online about cleaning and the additives seems to suggest mixed results at best. Didn't think mapping it out was really an option tbh?

As for replacing the car topic its more weighing up if spending 2-3k on a 10-11 year old car would be a good idea. I've noticed an increase in engine oil consumption recently aswell. Could this be related to DPF somehow I wonder?

I have a friend with VCDS setup going to see if he can scan the car for me and check the DPF values with it might give me an idea on the state of play before it goes to the mechanic. In the meantime Ill have a look for places to clean them over here in the west.

On the performance issues I don't think the fuel economy is what it once was and as mentioned above I notice an increase in engine oil usage having ruled out any leaks etc but perhaps it is being burned due to some other issues…..I notice the fan running a lot lately too when I stop the car I guess related to regens trying to run or something like that.

Maybe as a 1st step along with the VCDS Ill get some of the DPF additives and take it for a good blast on the motorway.

Fans staying on and increased fuel consumption are sure signs of a DPF trying to regenerate. Scan the car for any faults and delete them if there are any as the DPF won’t regenerate with faults stored. Also make sure you have half a tank of fuel and add some DPF cleaner in and drive on the motorway at say 120km/h in 5th gear to keep the revs high. Scan the car again after to see if any faults come back.

Thanks for this, I will try that tomorrow and see what comes up.

My DPF light has come on twice in 6 years of ownership.

Both times I bought DPF additive from halfords for 12e,drove the car on motorway for 50km at 3000 revs.It worked both times, definitely try this before anything too drastic.

I'm not sure if a car with a mapped out DPF is legal or would pass NCT (if spotted)

Imo I wouldn't be going down the route of paying 2k to have it replaced on that car.

Technically not legal, but zero enforcement whatsoever. Will pass an NCT if done correctly. Hopefully OP doesn’t have to go down that route anyway

Hi Guys. Just a follow up after some more searching etc. The VCDS seems to suggest there was life in the DPF yet about 63g of Ash built up and the limit is 80g. Unfortunately we couldn't run a log with the laptop as the battery was useless. So after some more digging I sourced a Bluetooth OBDII adapter and a VAG DPF app from the Android playstore.
Above is the current status of the car idling.

Going off this and the data I got from the VCDS it appears the car did a regen after about 70miles since the last one which seems a very short window. (The 70 miles was all journeys >20miles each and I have been driving harder recently)

My next plan is to log this app data on a few journeys so I can track what is happening to cause the regen so often.

If anyone has any ideas for things for me to check let me know.

Have app 70 way too short have same app and no dpf problem getting 450 km between regen . This car with over 200.000miles on it vw cc 2013

different pressure is high going by 25 I'm only at 8 and I'm still regening so will go lower

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,256 ✭✭✭testtech05

Yeah I didn't like the look of that. I've to do a 25mile trip this morning so gonna log it and see what might be shown.

Any idea what the differential pressure might indicate apart from causing regens?

That's true but it's also wholly irresponsible.

Deliberately defeating OE anti pollution equipment is short cutting your responsibilities. I'd have reservations about anyone in the trade who would even suggest it.

From what I know high pressure reading is reading it getting from dpf ie dpf is still blocked even after it did regen I'm probably if I remember right after regen around 5 so it take few hundred miles before it around regens level again what think is around 27 . Put finger in exhaust tip and if there soof dpf is gone I believe that good tell tall sign .

His responsibilities to what? The environment? While government jets from all over the world fly in for climate change conferences? Plenty people in the trade would recommend defeating anti pollution equipment vs cost

People need wake up adblue dpf is nothing to do with environmental ect it trying stop us breathing in poison in traffic is way I look at it . As for people in trade removing adblue dpf ect personally I wouldn't trust them as be same cu*t putting it back in went sh!t hit fan and it only matter of time went some mot centre in UK are Trailing particular matter testing and what uk do Ireland follow most of time

    Non related question, sisters car.

Ford Galaxy 2012 TDCI, runs fine when up to speed load of power driving , but very rough idle, hunting, and very low power pulling off, jerks a lot in low gear. Eventually it throws a '' engine malfunction light'' at which point all these issues vanish, ticks over lovely, pulls off nicely, no hunting etc, but it seems with this '' engine malfunction '' message on the dash, the DPF doesn't work, as after two weeks or so, the engine light comes on. Then it goes to mechanic, they force a regen, and car comes back same as before, very rough idle, hunting, and very low power pulling off, jerks a lot in low gear, throws '' engine malfunction again, then runs like a dream, until engine light comes on, and then it goes back to mechanic to repeat, and round and round we go.

Why is it running so badly, can't be mechanical if when the engine malfunction comes on the problem vanishes.

I google this, and so many with same issue with this Ford tdci.

You dont state the mileage .I had a 2011 mk 4 mondeo same engine ,On about 240,000 km dask lite up like a christmas tree .Got car scaned and fault was DPF.Got deleted and put another 100,000 km on it .Never missed a beat after .

I second this information. Rub finger along inside of the tail pipe. If it's black then DPF has failed (End Of)

Differential pressure is high tho which is pointing me towards a blockage. Search O'Rileys autos on YouTube and watch his dpf cleaning videos. This can be done at home!

I was quoted €2,500 from skoda dealer for just a replacement DPF 2 weeks ago. My car has 250k miles and DPF is at end of life (cannot bring pressures ash content down far enough, frequent regens)

I have a reconditioned DPF ordered from Germany for €600, will post how much I get charged for fitting once replaced.

My opinion is if you don't have upwards of €10k to replace a car, then you should always try to spend money on maintaining what you've got. But that's just my preference.

Thanks for the info I will check this out when I get home this evening. I was able to get the DPF app on my phone also and have some logs from a couple of journeys. Just need someone who knows a bit more than me to take a look at them now :)

If anyone on here is interested in taking a look let me know.
