Rebecca Cheptegei was set alight by her ex boyfriend. He poured petrol on her and set her on fire.

What the hell is wrong with some people? I don't know if she won a medal or not but either way she did not deserve that.

She was only 33 😞 . She still had loads to give and at least another Olympics to compete in.

I hope he rots in the worst prison that Uganda have.

It's not. It is absolutely horrific and terrible what happened to her. I was just saying I did not know. She did not deserve the horrible attack and subsequent death to her from it.

She's not the first African athlete to be murdered by husbands or boyfriends.

Kenyan Agnes Tirop in 2021 and Kenian-Bahraini Damaris Mutua the following year, with their partners identified as the main suspects in both cases.

I'm not sure what's to discuss. More pointless murders. The murder rate in Uganda is 10 times that of Ireland.

He should have been left to burn in the first place but then I suppose no justice could be got. Hopefully they throw him in a cold dark cell let him rot there.

The assault comes two years after Kenyan-born athlete Damaris Mutua was found dead in Iten, a world-famous running hub in the Rift Valley.

And in 2021, record-breaking Kenyan runner Agnes Tirop, 25, was found stabbed to death at her home in Iten in 2021. Her estranged husband is on trial over her murder. He has denied the charges.

Latest figures from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics published in January 2023 found that 34 percent of women in the country had experienced physical violence since the age of 15.

Something that also made me despair in this awful thing, apart from her murder itself of course, was how her father seemed to talk about her in financial terms too, about how she had been supporting the whole family.

It seems like to the men in her life her only value was how much money she could bring them.

I couldn't really work that out either: she seemed to be from Kenya originally, but had Ugandan nationality? Or was from Uganda originally but was living and working in Kenya? I haven't seen it explained clearly anywhere.

RIP to her anyway. Tragic barely begins to describe it. I wonder what will happen to her children.

I'm not sure whether it's a good thing her murderer is dead or whether a trial would have been a useful chance to educate people about this sort of violence.

Seems the scumbag has himself now died from burns sustained in the attack. Good, though cannot undo the injustice of yet another murder of a woman by a man, when are men ever going to stand up and demand the end of gender based violence?

I don't think it's a gender based thing though, a male star would have been seen as a meal ticket in just the same way.

I think it's an awful pity that he died. It would have been better if he had survived just about so it went to trail and he was put in a cold dark cell as well as being badly burnt and scarred for the rest of his miserable life.

You're assuming he would have ended up in a cold dark cell etc etc.

That's not necessarily what happens in cases of domestic violence, especially in countries where women are seen as commodities.

Several other cases mentioned below (more than the two mentioned above, which are mentioned in this too) and not one of where the partner has been convicted and given a long prison sentence. Or any prison sentence. "Case is ongoing" seems to be the norm - but we don't know if the accused is in prison. Certainly there seems to be a sentiment of impunity among the men.

Yes I suppose I was as in any civilised nation that is what would happen but then these are third world uncivilised countries so I guess not.

It's disgraceful that no one has been conficted fir them other cases. Very sad to see.
