How to send ammunition from EU to Ireland

Hi all!

Is it feasible to send a few slabs of ammunition from France to Ireland? I plan to travel to France soon and thinking to buy there some new brands of cartridges. Not interested to bring ammo by the plane. Can I send them home (Dublin)?

• Delivery. What services would deliver ammo from France to Ireland?

• Custom and other import issues. Is there anything I should do?

I am talking about shotgun ammunition, 12 gauge for clay shooting. Irish license and European pass.

You'll need a DOJ import cert for this shipment,listing brand,number of shells etc as well as your liscense here and EU firearms passport if you are buying in person in France.

They usually ship with Colissimo which comes out with DPD our end,more or less

I have found the form to apply for importing ammo as an individual. Do you know how long it takes to get the approval?

Regarding the delivery, I found ammo in Colissimo's list of prohibited items. Do you think they will take slabs from me?

For an import permit they will process it within a week usually.

You are stuck however with finding a hazmat courier, ammunition is a hazardous material when shipped between countries in the EU, and so you will be paying thousands to a hazmat courier to transport ammunition between any EU country.

In short it is not economic for an individual to do so, especially since the larger ammo distributors will not ship to an individual here, only to a dealer because the permit process for them from dealer to dealer is easier.

If you do happen to find a courier who will ship ammo for a reasonable price then do please share it here, but any I have found who are willing to accommodate the request started at a couple grand.

What French ammo are you looking at? Most can be got here. Mary arm is imported by a crown in dundalk

is it easier from Germany? Found a hornady ammo I use that can’t be got here anymore. A 308 round. Would buy 400-600 rounds. Is it still prohibitive cost wise for a courier?

5kg flight weight allowance if you go there and collect it and get import/export paperwork.

See my answer above, all EU countries incur hazmat shipping for ammo so Germany is no easier.

The permits aren't the problem, the immense cost of hazmat shipping is.

Ammo is allowed on some airlines, up to a total weight of 5kg including packaging, so probably 200 rounds or so of 308.

There is often a charge for it by the airline and you'd need to get the necessary permits on the German side to possess it while there also.

By and large for commercial loads.Rail/road and Ferry only FIK commercial kicks in around the 250 round count.

Possibly get it with a dealer who is importing a consingement to be included in their consignment as an add on load? You handling your import cert and paperwork and splitting the cost with them for transporting your ammo with theirs?

I was looking at Decathlon ammo. Very inexpensive in France.
