Hey folks. Just wanted to ask anyone who has been connected with the National Broadband initiative what kind of speeds and ping are you getting from your new connection and what ISP are you with?
They are currently laying down the cables on my road and I was wondering is it worth getting?

I am on 1Gbps connection with Vodafone. Consistently getting 920-930 down and 110-115 up, ping about 10ms max.

Jesus that's really good. Far better than I expected. Thanks mate.

It should be the same as with OpenEir / SIRO 1GB. So yeah it's really good. You'll also have 20+ providers to choose from as pretty much all of them can sign you up for NBI.

The past year I’ve been with eir on 1Gb plan - 930mb down and ~115mb up with a ping between 1-3ms (as rounded to the nearest number by Speedtest!). Ping result was typically ~1.8ms.

Have just changed to VM 2Gb because eir refused to provide a discount to renew the contract and VM offered 2Gb for the same money. Called VM on a Friday and the changeover happened the following Wednesday morning. Carried on using my own equipment. All it took was a power cycle and done. Seamless.

It’s also healthily over-provisioned so getting ~2.3Gb down and 230mb up with 3ms ping. I suspect the download speed might actually be a touch higher but with overheads, I’m hitting the limits of my 2.5Gb network.

I’d add as well, while we’re used to ISPs providing trash tier modem/router equipment since the dawn of time, VM’s seems a half-decent bit of kit. It’s got 3x 2.5Gb LAN ports and 1x 10Gb port and also a 10Gb WAN. Still left it in its box, of course.

Very nice add but not really consisting full data of quality for connection.

now (what is the real quality parameter) Speedtest.net added download and upload latency.

Those 2 are the most important information about connection. So If you show what are results for your provider, this will help me very much.

On Reddit there is post explaining most of the knowledge about this.

Here is link: Reddit and topic:

Is it Eir and clone Pure Telecom especially terrible lately on quality of service and latency?

I can not post a link, so you have to google it or search on Reddit.

I'm assuming you're referring to bufferbloat. A phenomenon that has become a totally unnecessary boogieman on internet forums. Bufferbloat is an inevitable consequence of saturating a connection. There's a spectrum of factors that aggravate/mitigate it that are both inside and outside the control of the customer and the ISP. Bufferbloat test results will also vary significantly from test to test. It's important to realise that it isn't the 'all-revealing' measure of an ISP's quality that you may think it is. However, here's mine from a few minutes ago:

    Hope this helps!

Seems you're on Virgin but hard to say where, prolly as well Dublin. So you have tested server “next door” but still when I test Limerick I have latency 115ms you have 16 there, I will check Sligo… Nothing in Sligo got Derry:

The latency is not buffering, it is more like carousel for queueing to free logical line to server. Download latency shows how busy is your PC and how often it takes a package from the network. 20 ms is about 50 packages per second. But 95 ms is only 10.

In addition, there is full explanation why Ping is Ping and next two numeric results are Latencies, and as such are the most important and have the higher impact on quality of broadband:

During a Speedtest, we measure your ping at three stages:

    • Idle: We test your idle ping at the beginning of your Speedtest to measure the response of a request on your network as if it is not in use.
    • Download: During the download test, we measure your ping to see how it is affected by download activity on your network. A common situation for receiving high download responsiveness might be a household member installing a large game.
    • Upload: During the upload test, we measure your ping to see how it is affected by upload activity on your network. A common situation for receiving high upload responsiveness is a household member recording a video on their phone, and automatically uploading it to the cloud.
