Liveline With Joe Duffy - Mod Note in OP

Callers like David could put Liveline (RTÉ1, weekdays, 1.45pm) out of business. He called to say that he had a great time at Lansdowne Road last Saturday.

Several other callers did not have a great time. They were complaining about the constant drinking and the disruption it caused – as if they’d gone to a rugby match and found themselves stuck in the middle of a drinking competition. David wasn’t complaining.

He specifically made the effort to call Liveline, not to complain. Instead he wanted to tell Katie Hannon it was a great day out…wonderful stadium… very efficient service… easily accessible… quite happy to be part of it… no issue at all.

Meanwhile, the other callers were describing scenes of drunkenness and cruelty which no decent person should have to endure. They were winning the argument by force of numbers, it’s just that everybody seemed to be having the wrong argument.

Big rugby matches in this country have now become social occasions on a grand scale, not just at the stadium but in the homes of many people who choose to have dinner parties and other such soirees with the game as the centrepiece – or maybe in some cases, just the sidepiece.

But there is another argument, that sport if it’s being done properly, is not really a social occasion, as such. To be complaining about anti-social behaviour in such a setting can seem like something of a category error.

When I hear these people talking about the constant traffic to and from the bars and the toilets at “the Aviva”, I can’t help thinking about the terraces at English football matches in days of yore, when it was not uncommon for men to urinate without even leaving their hard-won positions to use whatever toilet facilities had been provided.

As long as the result went their way, none of them were complaining.

Bella Freud, though she is coming from a somewhat different milieu, might understand.

Methinks David was a PR plant by the IRFU to shift the negative narrative

I’d put money on your being right. The 6 Nations is nothing nite than a bit of a fundraiser for the various RFUs which really stood out when the pandemic started. Bad publicity will keep away some potential punters.

I just find it pointless watching the Dave 6 trans okay each other every February. I’m not a sports fan mind you.

I'm not a sports fan but I do like rugby and I enjoy the 6 nations. It's nice to watch a competition which Ireland has a decent chance of winning as well.

And I think at least one of the callers complaining was a shill from Alcohol Action Ireland. They were on with Pat Kenny during the week complaining that Guinness were flouting the laws surrounding advertising of alcohol by sponsoring the 6 Nations and it meant children were exposed to the dangerous effects of seeing the Guinness logo.

Looks like from the intro that the storm recovery will be front and centre on today's show. I wonder was KT and a producer brought in to the headmistress' office so to speak after complaints about this week's run being a complete ball of sheite 🤔

I had to spend circa €500 with physio a few years back, couldn't claim that back as it's only possible if you were referred to them by a doctor. Couldn't get an appointment for a doctor for a good 2-3 weeks at the earliest which was the jaysus reason I went to the jaysus physio as an alternative to the pain.

    Hah. :)

There is always an arsehole lurking in a corner desk, one who hates the public.

Bumped into one or two (maybe the same one) in An Post, who hates my parcels.

Although, I had the good fortune to encounter a very decent Tax Inspector, so my opinion of them isn't entirely negative.
