2017 Hyundai Ioniq HEV engine repair and further options.

    Hi all,

    So, long story short, my Ioniq HEV developed a fault in the EGR cooler and the mid-exhaust cooling system, which has resulted in possible water intake into the engine. I've been told by the local Hyundai dealer that most likely it was a fault during the part's manufacturer, but only exhibited now after 118k km. Warranty is out since Jan 2022, so there's no chance it will be looked at by Hyundai as part of goodwill.

    I've since replaced the daily driver, so I'm not tied to getting this done quickly.

    I see a few options.

    1. New parts - both EGR and exhaust cooling system. I've been told one part is out of stock with no stock return date.
    2. "Reconditioned" parts. Unknown cost and labour cost. Could also consider engine replacement, but that's a whole other kettle of fish.
    3. Scrap the car. Least favourable option, to be honest, but I need to be realistic.

    After these parts are replaced, the engine itself would need to be investigated for water intake, so whatever is spent on the car to that point might be lost and we're back to option 3.

    I'd appreciate any advice.

    I’d start by looking for a second hand engine but they’re a rare car so I wouldn’t expect to find too many on offer. Cheap car here but it’s probably cheap for a reason; https://www.donedeal.ie/view/37333022

    Is the engine hydro-locked?

    Have you tried to drain the coolant out and see if it turns over by hand?

    You might get away with just the EGR cooler - well thats how Id approach it.

    Id drain the oil and refill with fresh oil and try turn over by hand.

    Coolers seem to be known to fail and as long as the engine hasnt been damaged ie a bent conrod or other catastrophic failure you could be lucky.

    I've been looking for a couple of weeks now. There are a good few available, the PHEV has the same engine and was used across all the Ioniqs until they were discontinued in 2021/2022. I think the Kona hybrid used it too.

    Most likely I'll need the mid section of the exhaust too.

    My big issue is finding the history of the car, most likely any engine will have to be reconditioned if it's removed from another car, which adds costs.

    Agreed about that red Ioniq, saw it about 3 weeks ago at nearly €9k, there's very little information on it.

    Not that I'm aware of Hellrazer. It turns over and drives okay, originally there was a yellow engine light that showed up for about 30 seconds and a minor loss of power causing a little shuddering that lasted about a minute.

    Car has been moved by the dealer keeping it at the moment, but not too far.

    I've been told €3k to replace the EGR and mid-exhaust cooling system, then like you said, luck comes into it after that.

    The dealer can't get one part, but I'm not sure which one. I can try the parts guy at the dealer and source it, then source a reconditioned alternate part. I wouldn't be too sure the dealer will install a non-new part sourced from a non-Hyundai source, so I've been contacting independent specialists to book the car in.

    Send me a reg for it by PM - I still have a few contacts in Hyundai. But I think that cooler is available after market non genuine.

    Before you buy anything just get a compression test done and check all cylinders. That will tell you if there has been hydrolockoing and a bent con rod. If that check out then the basic 3ngine should be fine.

    Can you not just remap the car and blank off the EGR? Why spend thousands on a replacement?

    I'm not going to lie, I'm not at all familiar with engine mechanics, so I'm relying on people who know better than me about this.

    If a compression test will give me an answer to the engine integrity without going down the rabbit hole of replacing parts, it's worth doing.

    Interesting, it was mentioned by the Hyundai techs to do a temporary blanking of the EGR and mid-exhaust cooler to test the seals on the cooling system, so it could be an option.

    I have zero knowledge or experience of engine mechanics, but I'm trying to get my head around it all.

    Its definitely possible. Also, why is your 7 year old car at the main dealers? No wonder your potential repair bill is so high. An independent mechanic would be a much better option

    I work down the road from them and the issue came up just as I was passing on the way home.

    They've also been good for customer service over the years and they've also suggested an indy for the repairs. I've contacted John Earls in Arklow myself as that's not too far away from me.

    But I'm open to suggestions on good indies in the Wicklow/Wexford area.

    Yes, it is driving. Not too far though - to the back of their lot, about 50 meters.

    I've seen those reviews and they're very positive. The contact I've had from them has been very good so far.

    I've now more options to consider from this thread that I would not have known about, so thanks for your suggestion.

    EV breakers in Newry have a hybrid ioniq I think. Worth a phone call. Main dealer is unlikely to install aftermarket or second hand parts.

    3K is not a massive bill, an independent garage should be less as long as they can resolve the issue. Many garages have waiting lists of weeks, both main dealers and independent garages.

    Tried them a couple of weeks ago ZG, at the time they said they only do EVs.

    You're right, it's not a massive bill, but there's one part that can't be OEM sourced, so it would be reconditioned or third party - neither of which will be touched by a dealer. The local recommended independent has a 10 week lead time on appointments.

    From the suggestions in the thread, blanking the EGR and remapping is a viable option. Although, I'm not sure if it applies to the mid-exhaust cooling system.
