Where are all the deals on 2nd hand EVs.

    Hello All,

I have a Nissan leaf for 7 years now. It's never given me a bit of trouble and works great for local and some longer trips.

We are looking for a 2nd EV to drive 120 km motorway trips 5 days a week.

We have about €25,000 to spend and no trade in.

We are interested in an MG4 and we see a low mileage one in a dealers with 18,000 km for €24,500. Is this a deal?

There is a private one for sale on Done deal for €22,000 for 32 days now also.

Interested in ID3 and maybe a Tesla Model 3 lower range 2021. I know Teslas are hard to find at that price??

Two teenagers will be in the back at weekends so would need to be roomy so Kona not an option.

I would appreciate any advice or ideas as we are looking to purchase fairly soon.

    Thanks all.

Best value I’m seeing at €25K is in used ID.4’s. You’ll pick up a low mileage 77kWh car with lots of spec for that kind of money. HV battery warranty is 8 years or 160K Kms whichever comes first.

Thanks for that. Yes we looked at the ID3 and went for a test drive. We thought the ID4 was a bit big. But we might look again and test drive one as there are a good few in Galway in dealers not too far away from us. Is the ID 4 better car than MG4?

The MG4 is a 2023 car and has 52 battery.

I know it's all subjective about which is best as some folks love VWs etc.

    Thanks.

my old id.3 tour. is up for sale in Holden motor group. It has 84k km on it but was running perfectly when we gave it back to vw finance in July.
a great middle sized car. It has a very high spec with almost every thing you could get except heat pump and sunroof.

hard to post link but this is the heading.

    2021 VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 PRO.. 77KWH.. LONG RANGE

Main thing the ID.4 will give you over an ID.3 is more boot space

They're actually very close in size, same height, width and wheelbase. The ID.4 has a longer rear overhang giving a bigger boot(y)

If you can get one with the bigger battery (77kWh) then it'll have buckets of range

Thanks for those recommendations for ID.4.

So is it a better car than an MG4.

I see so many ID.4s now on the road.

I just checked out the ID 3 and they dropped the price.

Why did you get rid of it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,778 ✭✭✭✭fits

Bought it for commuting but it ended up being the main family car. We brought it to France and everything. Just needed something a bit bigger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

    Thanks for that update.

There are so many cars out there and deciding on one is difficult.

We kinda narrowed it down to an MG4 as it had low mileage and is a 2023 with good reviews of the car.

I guess we are looking for a deal but a reliable car also.

I have the 30 KW leaf for 7 years now and never a bother with it apart from small range.

But only money I put into it was the yearly service and change of tyres.

So looking for a car like this as in reliable but not another leaf.

    A brand new MG4 isn't much over 25k, buying 2nd hand doesn't make sense for the MG4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

    I think it's 4,000 more for a new one. So saving 4,000 for 2nd hand for €24,500.

It has not devalued like VW or Tesla.

I’d be more inclined to offer €19,000 or so for the private sale one rather than paying €24,500 to a dealer. They both have manufacturers warranty so buying private is the smarter choice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,427 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

"Better" is a bit subjective, and unless someone here has owned both you're unlikely to get a complete answer

Main complaints I'd have with the ID.4 are the mediocre software, crappy touchscreen buttons and it generally feeling like a bus

Main good points for the ID.4 would be that it's a fairly quick and efficient bus, has lots of range and there's a nationwide network of VW mechanics (although don't expect they automatically makes any issues quicker to fix because they rarely have parts in stock)

Maybe the MG4 thread will have some more pros and cons for that car

I think the bad software thing is over emphasised for vw. It’s not that bad at all. And the driver assist systems are excellent. I’d be happy to own one again as long as there is good spec in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Thanks I will definitely consider one. What car do you drive now if you don't mind me asking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,778 ✭✭✭✭fits

we got a model y. It’s fine. I’m not as fond of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,035 ✭✭✭zg3409

The mg4 is a relatively small car, I would say smaller than a leaf but not certain. Make sure you test one out in terms of back seats and boot. In terms of reliability they are a Chinese brand and it's a very new model. Reliability will be unknown. If you intend keeping it out of manufacturer warranty it is a relatively high risk as it's not as common as a leaf so harder to get repairs done at back street garages compared to leaf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

    Thanks for that information.

I was reading some of the MG4 thread on here and it all seems positive with the car.

Yes we plan to keep long-term and hopefully no big issues.

It just seems the best deal out there for a newish car with low mileage. We will get the 2023 one as there are 2 in Dublin in the grey colour and that is our preferred colour. It's the excite basic range but enough for our daily commute.

There appears to be a backlog for new MG4s coming from China so dealers have said.

We will probably go with the dealer and see will they knock something off. We have 1 year warranty also with dealer if anything goes wrong.

My old 222D Cupra Born is up for sale in McCoys for 27,450 , only 11,500km done .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Thanks for that. Do you mind me asking why you are selling.

Yes we looked at those and liked them.

If I was choosing between a demo model MG4 or a used low mileage 77kWh ID.4 for motorway journeys, I’d pick the VW every time. Drive them both, a decent garage will loan you one for a day or even a weekend to make up your mind. You don’t want to buy one and regret it as either could be difficult to resell without taking a big hit financially.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

We only test drove the ID3. We found the ID4 too big for us but we didn't test drive one.

I see a few deals alright with ID4.

Why such a drop in price for these 2nd hand.

We only need range for 120 km return daily so mg4 is grand.

It's not a ex demo but dealer said range was not enough for person who originally brought it.

I know some folks might not want the hassle of dealing with public charging either if on a long journey.

For us we can plan public charging on the few long trips we might go on.

I drove to W Cork last summer from Co Clare in a leaf and had to use chargers on the way.

I wouldn't be doing it every weekend as it did add onto my journey.

At Newcastle West two big SUVs were charging for a while.

I should have charged in Limerick city and would have got to Killarney.

But know for future if ever have to use public charging again.

The MG4 is a nice car. I was in one at the weekend 4 adults fit very comfortably. I'm 6,2 and the front had loads of room.

Ive the MGZS myself and find the MG to be very well built. Only issues people seem to have are fixed with a software update. That seems to be more laziness on dealers side not doing them as they take time, than you needing to keep on going back for regular updates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,475 ✭✭✭dunnerc

Traded it in for a 242 Cupra Born , I'm very happy with the Borns , lovely cars .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭joe1303l

The reason for such a recent price drop on used ID.4’s is mainly VW dropping €10K off the price of new ones following earlier Tesla price cuts. An EV with a 77kWh battery would be a real gift on any occasional long journeys. On the normal day to day, you’ll be able to keep your battery between 20% and 80% all the time without even trying. I find it hard to consider how an ID.4 could be too big if you never test drove one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

I think the ID4 looks big and prefer the ID3 or Cupra Born size.

But yes I have not driven one so only commenting on looks only.

I really like the look of the Cupra.

Also, MG4 is fine to look at and isn't too big.

But we probably should test drive a few more before making our minds up.

I also like the look of the Tesla 3 model but have not driven one either.

So we are hoping to buy next week as we need a 2nd car by then.

I get what you are saying about having extra range and I have experience of public charging and having to wait etc.

But for the few times we do a long journey we will plan.

There are so many choices out there and it's good to narrow it down to a few and then easier to make the decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,373 ✭✭✭ongarite

Boot space is smaller on MG4 than the Leaf.

My dad went from Leaf to MG4 last year & it barely passes the golf bag/clubs test.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Thanks that's good to know about boot size.

I know the dealer for ID3 mentioned boot fits golf gear as we asked about boot size. We don't golf though.

We have to do a check of MG4 during week and then whatever other cars we might be considering..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,569 ✭✭✭eagerv

I also like the look of the Tesla 3 model but have not driven one either.

Drive as many as you can, what suits me or others may not suit you. I went from an ID.3 to a RWD Model 3. I am so impressed by the simplicity, efficiency and standard equipment of the Model 3. A 363km trip during the week with ac on auto, returning with 18%. Driving normally at the speed limit (100 most of the time, less when traffic slower). My ID.3 would have probably used 15-20% more energy for similar speeds.

There are huge M3 deliveries over coming week so more 21/22s could hot the market around the €28k mark. The 22s the better car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Oh great thanks for that info about M3.

Where is best place to buy one? Will definitely keep an eye out.

Why 22 the better one? Because of battery quality.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,482 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

battery, ryzen chip, lit 12v battery, all heated etc.

Would you look MG5 estates? Lot of garages selling off their demos at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Thanks for that suggestion and can take a look at those as well.

Have you considered an Ioniq 5? You should be able to pick one up for around 25K. 5 year warranty and 8 year battery warranty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭joe1303l

€25K will easily get you a small battery Ioniq 5. More desirable 73kWh versions are nearer €30K though and harder to find.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Probably no worse than the MG4 that the OP is looking to buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,264 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

is 120KM the return or is it each way? I have a Ioniq 38 and on weeks im in work its roughly a 60k each way trip, 85% motorway and it comfortably does that 120K return trip. During the summer it uses maybe 45% of the battery for the return trip, which would be recharged in 3 hours over night.

The 38 wouldn't be the biggest car, but bigger than a Kona, similar in size to the leaf (smaller boot though, its depth is probably bigger, but its no where near as tall). Don't think there would be any issues with 2 teenagers fitting in the back.

If your happy enough to go up North, you'd pick a 2022 model for well less than €20k.

Here is a 2022 for just over €16k

    https://www.usedcarsni.com/2022-Hyundai-Ioniq-100kW-Premium-38kWh-5dr-Auto-346106257

Or a 2021 higher spec model for just under €16k

    https://www.usedcarsni.com/2021-Hyundai-Ioniq-100kW-Premium-SE-38kWh-5dr-Auto-348453289

Both should be suitable for importing to Ireland for free (once they have been in private ownership in the North, basically there is a persons name on the log book). Remainder of the warranty should apply on both of them too.

Just a warning that it would definitely would have higher service costs than your Leaf (something to enquire into about all the cars your looking at). Ioniq 38 need to be services every 15Km or one year, and some of the services can be expensive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,713 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

I have an Ioniq 5 and had an ID3 and both were around the same efficiency wise, maybe 5% worse.

ID3 was actually worse in winter but that was because the battery heater kicked in the whole time but this has been sorted since with an update.

Hi we are still interested in the MG4 for €24,500 in Dublin.

    But I see a Tesla Model 3 2021

75 kWh with 28,000 km for €25,000 on sale now. Only thing it's white. But I guess we could live with that.

    Seems a good deal.

    Or not.

The MG4 seems a safer buy??

We have to make our minds up by weekend.

I don't think we will be travelling up north for a car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭joe1303l

The Tesla isn’t particularly cheap but it has low mileage. I’d be more tempted by this one below if I really wanted one. I don’t see a lot of value in a newish MG4 and I’d be concerned on it’s resale value whenever you go to move it on. At €25K, I still think a used ID.4 is a better option.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/view/37126919

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

I looked at that other Tesla already and it's sold. It was a deal and sold immediately.

Ok we will test drive an ID4 before making our minds up.

Actually we plan to hold onto the car for a long time so not too worried about resale value.

Maybe ID3 also might be an option again.

Thanks and we will try to test drive one in next day or two.

The smaller battery in ID4 is fine also for our needs.

    Thanks

Does that mg4 have a reversing camera?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Good question and I don't think so. It is up in bluegate car store and we reserved it so I am thinking we might lose deposit now.

We actually have not test drove it yet. They are taking forever to do a finance deal and will not knock off anything off the price.

    It is 24,495.

It would suit us to get a car in the west as we need to travel to Dublin but deals are up there it seems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭crl84

Excite is the base model without reversing camera, heated seats, heated steering wheel, 360 camera and some iflther stuff. Exclusive is the higher trim with those.

Not sure if that's much of a deal if its the Excite. They were 29k On The Road new (€27495 before fees).

Could get a brand new 242 one for 26k recently feom dealers with their EcoBoost trade-in offer....

@OP Have you looked at the current model Leaf at all or the Renault Megane E-Tech?

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Yes it's €4000 difference between 2023 and 2024 basic model.

    Yes it's the basic model.

    Probably not a deal so.

Ok will have to do some serious thinking now as getting confused and need a 2nd car by next Wednesday the latest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Not really interested in another Leaf so haven't looked at them.

I haven't looked at Renault Megane E-Tech either.

    Is it a good car?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Pluto59

Actually thinking about it now and maybe I could trade in my 2016 leaf 30 KW for 62 KW one.

But would still need a 2nd for runaround.

I was kinda steering away from the leafs as we wanted a different car.
