Straw 2024

How are people finding it to source Straw this year. It's very scarce in the West anyway.

I'm hearing prices of 45 euro for round and 90 euro for squares delivered. How does that compare with rest of country.

Also, I've always use barley straw for bedding but what would oaten or wheaten straw be like for bedding?

Know nothing about bedding with wheaten as I always used barley straw too. As regards prices, I paid €25 a bale off the field in North Wexford if that helps. Work in the transport etc then.

Was quoted €40/bale for a 60-bale load of oaten straw, from his shed in south Kilkenny to mine in mid-county Waterford. Maybe 35-ish miles

There's less soakage in wheaten straw, but it breaks down quickly and is ideal for ewes in pens at lambing time as it won't get wrapped around there feet, oaten straw is ok but more coarse than barley, haven't heard any prices but every bit of straw is being baled here in Kildare, haven't seen any chopped

Wheat straw pure s@#%/...got ot years ago never again. 1st choice winter barley followed by spring barley nothing else.

Wheat straw is fine for feeding?? Hopefully will get oaten straw for feeding this year. Even if I use it for bedding it will be better than sitting on concrete. Have barley booked aswell, both spring crops so nothing in the shed yet! Seen farm theory say he paid 100 pound for 8x4x4s delivered. He didn't say from where. I presume it was barley because it was a couple of weeks ago.

crazy stuff. Fella that transporta the straw said a lot of his farms he buys off aren’t selling it yet, waiting a few more weeks to see how the rest of the harvest goes elsewhere before they start to sell what they have.

Priced Barley Straw with local lorry man here in Leitrim that draws it down from lower Midlands each year,Some of fellas he usually buys it off aren't selling it yet but it's saved.

He brought down a load of round bales of good Barley straw last week and got 45 euro a bale for it.

Any man along the Western Seaboard that uses a fair bit of straw each Winter is going to have an expensive Winter!

Got lovely winter barley, few weeks ago, was sent out to unload load for lad he got for feeding, I asked driver could I get loads , he landed to me next day, 25 in field 30 delivered, suited me grand I didn't have time to go for it,

barley straw will go twice as far at least so if it’s only €5 more I wouldn’t touch it.

I'm using wheaten straw here for bedding with years. I don't see the fascination with barley straw. I find it just curls up into knots. Have oaten straw for the first time in a while also. I'll feed it to cows and bed under calves with it too. I use pea and bean bales too. Anything that i can bale and is value for money I'll use for bedding.

I am. There's good crops of straw this year from what I see. Good bulk and good quality. If the weather is alright there should be plenty of straw available.

An acquaintance in West Cork told me that it's all straw and no grain heads on his stuff and his neighbours are the same. He's blaming poor weather conditions.

WInter barley straw in the south east down about 3-4 bales per acre on normal yields.

May sown spring barley crops around here (of which there are many) have short straw. The stuff sown in April seems ok.
Some of the bigger lads, conscious of the fact that late harvesting shortens the baling window are chopping straw and taking the €100 an acre rather than taking a chance on the weather and chasing lads all winter for payment.
