I have a PMI 46 10 VHI policy. One of the kids with elevated liver was released from ED pending blood tests returning on liver. They are feeling nauseous and vomiting slightly. I have a GP referral letter - is it possible to present at say the hermitage in Lucan and pick up process from there? Thx

You'd have to get your GP to give you a referral to a consultant in a private hospital. Also call VHI to make sure the consultant is covered by your health insurance. And for general advice on this. The private hospitals don't do emergency work. That's my understanding. VHI do have clinics for simple stuff like broken bones, scans, etc. Just call your insurer for advice and how to proceed. And out of hours doctor, back to public ED if it's an emergency right now. You might also have 24x7 nurse via phone with VHI for advice too.

As above. Phone VHI and see how your particular cover operates and what the process is.

There are some private emergency departments. I think from scanning benefits most private insurance policies provide limited benefits for it and you'd be looking at hefty co-payment.

Details for Hermitage here. It is over 16s only.

    • Monday to Sunday including Bank Holidays: 8 am – 5 pm
    • Call us on 1800 283 999 during opening hours
    • Patients are advised to phone ahead to make an appointment before they attend.
    • Over 16s only.
    • The ED attendance fee at Hermitage Clinic is €235.00. Where you incur ED attendance charges, they will be capped at €650.00 (exclusions apply such as referral to a specialist consultant, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT).

Regarding the private A&E, there is usually a €200ish payment, and most policies cover €50-100 of it. After that you are charged for everything as an outpatient up to a limit of 650 including the original fee. Your policy will cover most of it though through your everyday expenses section. So if you’ve an xray that €100 and your policy covers 75% of X-rays then you only pay €25 towards it after you get the refund from your insurance.

I’m not sure if any of the private A&Es treat children though.
