    Red rawl plugs. Get a screw, screw it in about half way and give a little pull with a pliers. You want it in enough to grab the plug, but not enough to spread the bits at the back which will stop it from coming out.

    Whats best way to apply the filler? Just spread it on?

    If they are tricky to pull out I'd pull them out a little way - 1-2mm - cut off whats sticking out then push the rest of the plug into the void.

    Wake me up when it's all over.

    +1 on the above, if they are not coming out easily you can just push them all the way in (assuming they are not into brick/block) If they are then, as above, snip off what you can before pushing back in, but really they should pop straight out with a pliers.

    Or screw and small claw hammer .

    Just use piece of timber flat against the wall surface
