Is there some sort of collective trauma around the economy in Irish society?

I'm catching up with some of the Irish news stations.

How would the election of Donald Trump affect the Irish economy? quick let's have an economist and a journalist on to discuss this.

Unemployment is up .002% let have 2 economists talk about what this means for the Irish economy.

Intel: could this mean disaster for the Irish economy? let's have 2 economists and 2 commentators discuss this.

Its more than the 24-hour news cycle or disaster sells at this stage.

The UK economy is ropey at the moment and it's still dose not generated the same response.

Because the warning signs are flashing and Ireland is heavily dependant on the US economy. The US is likely already in recession or will be within months, and we haven't had a downturn in years so yeah expect more of this in the weeks and months ahead unfortunately.

Well in the UKs case a couple of things may be at play.

1. they have more or less made made a cock of the economy (relative to what it could have been) and there's no unscrewing that pooch in the short term and people in general may not want to hear about it...reopening relatively fresh wounds/brexit etc...whats done is done...you discuss the economy in any great detail or attempt to understand it inevitably brexit will come up (unless you focus on one thing to attack an individual/politicians etc)
2. There might be an old empire mindset, rule britannia buried in the collective subconscious...they might not subconsciously feel their fate is as dependant on the US as it may be

In our case

We know we are joined at the hip with the US, at least in terms of multinationals etc....if they catch a cold we do too etc so it makes sense a cohort are interested in that kind of content ..or at least you can horse it out to hhem and they will consume it in enough numbers that you can sell advertising etc...its also cheaper to produce to fill airtime than dome alternatives...and you can't do reruns all the time!

Our economy (covid aside which was pretty much universal) has been relatively OK/quite good in some ways (not mentioning housing etc) since the GFC so its the opposite of the only way is up in the minds of anyone not 100% optimistic...and deep down there are a significant amounts of people predisposed to thinking the sky will fall in so there's a market for that...there's an audience here for it...when things are going well you tend to wonder whats going to make a balls of it...(I'd guess there's more of that if in general things didn't go well for a long time)

The economy is part of a suite of current affairs discussions in the media in the UK and it does not dominate nor is catastrophised in the same way as it is in the Irish media.

If you are unwilling to put the time and effort into it, I don't see why anyone else should - you are way behind, catch yourself up.

For example Intel has very little over all impact on the Irish economy, as for Trump he learned the last time around that he depends on Irish medical supplies and can't do anything about it!

And as someone involved in Swiss private banking we consider Ireland one of the strongest Euro economies and most likely to weather any future storms as you export high value added products that people can't be without. We saw this in 2007, covid and the most recent recession. Even the SNB holds a very large block of Irish Euro bonds as part of the national reserve.

I was trying for slight humor.

I know the Irish economy is fine not that you would pick that up from the Irish media at times or else the message is it might be grand now but doom doom is potentially around the corner.

Satire requires several elements to qualify as satire. I've most certainly 'heared' of it.

i don't know if its necessarily confined to economic matters, but the media in recent years is obsessed with crisis. Everything is doom and gloom, everything is an impending catastrophe. If its not the economy, its various wars, or climate change or the threat of terrorism or the latest one the big bad far right.

Everything is designed to put fear into listeners or viewers and there seems to be no end of experts lining up to give their opinions to the glee of the presenters who hang on their every word.

yep fear is a hook and the best kind of click bait. Not sure which Irish media outlets you tuned into MA but it can be refreshing to listen to discussion about these topics rather than being updated via knee jerk reactionary news feeds or the twitter machines.

I happened to turn on Newstalk at lunch time a few days last week the whole show is based on a mix of rehashing twitter, social media, and magazine articles id say the production meetings are hilarious.

That reminded me of the time I worked on jobbridge in the hse and one of the jobs they had me do was clear out the oncology record storage rooms, the process involved searching the names of files on RIP to see if they were deceased and removing them from the current system. It was my gateway to the drug. To think I didn't even get paid, for shame 😔
