I was there last week and stayed in the Marriott. 2 mins walk to the train station, 5 mins walk to the catherdral.

I travel to Cologne a lot with work and prices in Cologne for hotels fluctuate wildly, as previous poster has suggested the Marriott near to the Train Station is a decent location but, the area is not great after dark and limited restaurants - better off on the Cathedral side of the station - this is where you'll spend most of your time anyhow.

That said, Marriott is very nice although if brekkie not included it's very pricey.

On my last trip due to Euros being on and hotel rates through the roof I stayed in the Premier Inn Sud - great price at the time and a really nice hotel. Near to the Old Town (Altstadt) and a few other main sites so worth a look on your dates.

You will need a taxi from Cologne station - after you have your bearings there are trams nearby (Neumarkt) which will get you back to station/cathedral but, not ideal on arrival unless you are super confident with maps and public transport :-)

Also look at Motel One NeuMarkt - colleagues often stay here, again, decent central location and often a good price for a nice hotel.

What to see in Cologne -I am usually there for work so don't get in a lot of sight seeing but I have seen and recommend - Chocolate Museum (pre-book), Cathedral, a walking tour, walk along the river, cross the Hohenzollern Bridge. Roman Museum, Altstadt.

We stayed in the Accor Adagio aparthotel in the south inner city.

It is near the Premier Inn Sud mentioned above.

It is near a REWE supermarket.

It is about 500m to a tram station on Post strasse.

I would suggest any of the hotels in this area would be good as a tourist base - its down to availability and price - if you hit a Trade Fair or Carnival in Cologne costs will rocket.
