This is in my yard of house I just bought? What is it?

I looks aside from a mess like it may be a central heating pump. Turn the heating on and see if it turns on.

It is a good bit away from the central heating. I have a boiler next to house whereas this is in the yard well away from it on the other side of the house. Could it still be a central heating pump?

Possibly a water pressure booster pump - are you at the top of a hill ?

Yes, but it is not near where the mains is coming into the house. What I was thinking is could it be for percolation area to pump water up there which is well above the house again in height further up behind the house.

is there a well near by or a septic tank. could be a bubbler for the septic tank. looks a bit jerry rigged for that though.

The only thing is if it's a bubbler does that mean there is another pump somewhere to pump uphill to percolation area, because if that needs a pump it's not in an obvious location that I can see. There is only one pump in a manhole near the tank and it's the one in the picture

If it's to pump to the perculation and it breaks you will end up with a large smelly puddle next to the septic tank.

These types of arrangements tend to have a finite life in use and each time they are repaired they tend to look less and less professional.

That looks like a well to you? As we get it from the mains into the house? Would that be usual have a well and then the mains connected to the house?

It may have been installed before the house went on the mains, it maybe redundant now.

The pump will be at the bottom of the well.

Is that not just the supply from the pump at the bottom of the well, which then appears as the black taped pipe in the original picture?

Wells would typically have a pipe for water with a powerline wrapped around them, I can see both in the 2nd picture?

So would a septic tank with a pump. If the fall needed for the flow to the septic tank means it needs to go deep like that the waste water will need pumping out to the leach field.

Definately not a septic tank intermediary tank. That would look like a big sump and the pump would be visible and easily extractable and would have a float switch. Typically a sewage hippo pump.

Its a redundant deep well pump - end of story.

Yeah you'd expect some smell but you won't get that much on a decent sceptic tank and it depends which chamber you open.

This one is nearby also if it helps resolve the matter ( the 2 in the background are the original 2 manholes I discussed in this thread ).

Also does anyone know what is going on in this manhole in the picture above. I'm equally as flummoxed with what is going on here as in the first two.

I'm still going with septic tank although alternative thoughts include, disused septic tank and water storage tank.

I'm not convinced I'm right but thats my gut feeling having looked at the pictures.

Originally with your first 2 photos I thought a water well. 1 is there a bad smell coming from those pits? 2 can you go to the house wall pipes from the bathroom and get an idea of where your waste system pipes run to?
