Trade in for Electric Vehicle experience

    Hi all,

2 ICE household and we have made the decision to transfer now to one Electric car as there really is nothing that justifies the need for two cars.

Can I ask has anyone had any experience trading in 2 cars at the one time? I know selling privately would be optimal but there is a lot to be said about ease of trade in. My only concern is would there be a drop down in the trade in value compared to if we were to only trade in one?

Not an issue if both cars are desirable saleable vehicles that can be retailed easily. You need to accept you’re going to get a “trade price” at best for the convenience of same. If they are both s**tboxes, nobody will take them off you.

Its going to vary from garage to garage and from car to car.....however just at the moment some garages are struggling to sell EV stock of some models so may welcome your 2 trade ins. But you've to find a dealer that values both your cars where you want them. They'll do it, but at what cost to you?

My first EV I had a 2014 A6 to get rid of, the dealer offered me 14k for it, I eventually got 18k for privately. Instead I used my uncle's 2018 CHR which he wanted to sell as a trade in and got him a huge price for it, the dealer had a buyer lined up and I saw it on the roads locally in a few days after. So they valued one high and one low. Wouldn't have worked out great for me in that situation.

What are you looking for and what cars are you trading in?

Thanks for the guidances, I would say both are definitely 'Saleable' however at varying levels.

One is a 2013 diesel 2L A3 with 180k on the clock so I am not expecting much all but based on previous experience it is the type of car that will inundate me with tire kickers if I was to sell privately. The other is a Fiat 500 2018, This one I may consider selling privately as it is one of their Limited Edition Colab versions at last check there was only 2 in the country. Aim is to get something around the 35k mark (Trade in plus Cash) Still researching into things but atm looking at Tesla's and Mercedes EQA

Neither cars at that age are really going to be desirable to a main dealer assuming your buying new or nearly new. They are both generally outside the criteria for retailing on their forecourts or covering under their used car warranty. The A3 is simply too old and would probably go straight to auction by them so expect a low offer on it. The 500 might more appealing to them as it's newer but it's also easier for you to sell privately too and you will get more for it.

I think with the focus on these cars as trade ins it might detract you from getting a good deal on an EV as sales are on the floor. Dealers know it but can pretend otherwise so I reckon you are in a better position to bargain if you don't have trade ins distorting a deal that are not really valuable to them.

Try and sell both privately or maybe put the A3 through auction if you don't want to sell it yourself. Alternatively maybe go around local smaller independent dealers and see what they would offer you for it.

If you're considering Tesla you can get an online trade in price, use that as your starting point

Most of dealers using Carzone invite trade ins. You can insert details of the car you’re trading and see how it goes.

Fiat 500 you'll get a few young ones with a bit of cash arriving along with their dad and falling in love with it straight away and doing a deal.

Audi yeah you might get the young lads time easting but I'd stick both of those up privately. Price the Audi below what any dealer asking and it'll sell. I sold an 8 year old A6 in a few days in 2022 privately to first guy that came. About 2000 euro below dealer asking, you may not have to go that far below even at a lower value.

Try it for a few weeks, get rid of the fiat first as you prob don't want that as your only car for any time at all.

Appreciate all the solid advice. I will consider selling both privately then look more into what to go for. I have seen a handful of Merc EQA's in and around my budget so will have a test drive on those. Some up for 2 Months+ so there should be some wiggle room .

Don’t expect much wriggle room from a Merc dealer.

I wouldn't pay much attention to their trade in prices. I got offered close to 50% more than what Tesla offered me recently from several dealers.

Yes this is true but use that as your base price to see what others will offer. They should all beat that price no doubt

It's like when I go to sell a car to a dealer I get a quote from cartakeback and use that as my base point
