Irish ads interrupting streaming of foreign stations

I have some favourite foreign stations (for instance Greatest Hits Radio UK and some German stations) that I stream on a Renkforce HiFi internet radio. Part of the attraction of streaming stations such as this is hearing news and ads relevant to that station. Some time ago, clumsy edits in ad breaks have started appearing, and crappy Irish ads have been inserted into the breaks instead of the native ones.

This is really intrusive and seriously affects the listening experience. To kill the intruding ads I have to reload the station and the live ads reappear.

My questions are- Is this even legal? Who inserts these ads? Who pays for them? Who do I complain to?

…and most importantly, how can I stop unwanted Irish ads appearing during a foreign broadcast??

If you are listening to their direct stream; they are being inserted by the broadcaster; deliberately. They are getting money for them. You have no way of stopping this, and complaining to them won't achieve anything.

If you are listening via any form of intermediate provider, they may be doing it. Always try to ensure you use a direct stream.

Its through the IP address of your countrys broadband! Adversely,it works the opposite when you try to access ITVX or BBC iPlayer!

Interesting. It is difficult to see where the feed comes from as it's a 'black box' so when BBC radio 2 stopped using Shoutcast streaming and moved to HLS and DASH, the receiver just stopped picking the station up so I'm using a laptop now for the last few Radio 2 progs I listen to.

    Bring back VHF!

    Thanks folks.

There shouldn't be adverts if you are listening to BBC stations! I'm hearing Irish adverts on Greatest Hits and Planet Rock whilst listening through an internet radio!

My BBC never had ads. It simply disappeared. My problem is like yours. Irish ads on Greatest Hits Radio. It always seems to be the worst and most annoying ones too. The dope in the Garda station making a phonecall about his girlfriend's pics makes me run for the reload button!!!

    My answers are:

    1. Is this even legal? - Yes it is legal. Who did you think might be breaking some law?
    2. Who inserts these ads? - Ad insertion/replacement and streaming companies on behalf of the radio staions you listen to.
    3. Who pays for them? Not sure what you mean. You listen to a stream. An ad gets played. The ad play is registered. The client (Dunnes, Supervalu, Lidl etc.) pay for the ad. The radio station makes a few cent to pay it's staff and support the free stream. Other companies in the middle also get paid.
    4. Who do I complain to? Nobody.

If somebody in Germany tunes in to an Irish stream they will get localised advertising reflecting where they live.

You seem to think some malevolent character in Ireland is hijacking your stream to earn a few sneaky euro.

Their owners have Irish stations, so sell ads for those and anyone listening to their UK stations from Ireland

The only way to get around this is to fake that your in the country you want to hear of the ads.

Use a VPN or the like.

I watch the toy show each year on iplayer and they just block the ads. It was always part of the night to see the big Irish TV ads for christmas.

Is it only the Irish ads that are crappy ?

From someone who has listened to and watched a helluva lot of British media over the years I find their ads just as good or as bad as any I've heard in other English speaking media.

    How about the German ones?

Do you speak German enough to decipher what is a good and what is a crappy ad ?

Just to add, these advertisement inserts also exist in the UK as well for online listeners - they will send out localised adverts based on the geolocation of the listener's IP address which has its pros and cons as internal geolocation within the UK isn't very consistent and depends on your ISP. My current ISP identifies me as being located in NI, so I get fed local NI ads when applicable, but prior to this with previous ISPs I could have been geolocated to Scotland or England and instead (for example) get a "local" advert for a Further Education College in North London!

Well looking at the contributions here, Bauer Media is looking like the culprit. They own Greatest Hits Radio UK and a huge number of our own so can insert what they like.

    Thanks

You can solve this problem by getting an IP address of the country where the station is from.

And yes ads from another country do bother me, after all, I am listening to that station because I am interested in their stuff.

However I've only noticed the problem with a few sites offereng online streams. I would doubt if you went to the official website, unless geo blocking is applied.

On stations owned by Baeur and Newscorp, it will definitely still happen even if you direct to their site. They have ad sales houses in Ireland and sell ads for all streams here.

    In the end, that's controversial.

If you're interested in British affairs, you're not interested in Irish ads. That's my way of thinking.

Get some VPN solution and the problem is solved.

And if you don't want to listen to ads that make them money, the broadcaster has no interest in you.

Agreed, it's a problem. As said, a VPN solves that.
