Some people recommend using your phone but I would rather get a separate device for listening to audiobooks.

Any recommendations for a cheapish device for playing audiobooks?

I guess it will depend on whether the audiobooks need an app to play them or if you download them like a music file.

If you need an app then you could buy a cheap smart phone with no sim and use it via wifi only to download and listen to the books. Perhaps one of your friends/family has an old smart phone they could give you or sell you cheap.

If portability is not a big issue then you keep get a tablet or kindle fire (which sometimes can be quite cheap).

If they are downloaded files then you can still buy MP3 players - check out Amazon.
