A trailer is out for the movie adaptation of the Robert Harris novel:

Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Isabella Rossellini, dir. Edward Berger. They seem … tense!

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Watched this last night. I thought it was fairly intriguing until the last 10 mins. But the ending was ridiculous. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but prepare for it to go a bit leftfield at the end. I was a bit disappointed overall.

Saw this earlier and overall I was pleasantly surprised, it was a lot better than I expected(having had the ending revealed to me several weeks ago). The acting is just on a masterclass level, Ralph fiennes is brilliant and he can expect to be on the receiving end of an Oscar nomination I reckon, but everyone puts in great performances, expecially John lithgow and stanley Tucci. The Ending wasnt as bad as I expected, it was actually done in a way that I felt was fairly reasonable. All in all a really good papal intrigue film.

    Conclave AKA 100 Angry Cardinals – 6/10

I’m stuck in the middle with this one. On one hand, it’s far more entertaining than any film about electing a new Pope has any right to be. It has a big bombastic score and veteran actors giving it all the spuds. The scenery, sound design and costume work are all on point. Ralph Fiennes is terrific and his central performance commands your attention.

On the other hand, it feels like it’s leading to a clever revelation that never comes. There are loads of nuggets of information that you make a mental note of, as they seem important, but they rarely come back up. The final act delivers a curveball that even someone with a masters in story structure would never see coming.

It’s not bad, but for such a preposterous plot it doesn’t half lack some much needed levity.

Agree with all the above points. Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rosellini, and John Lithgow are wonderful in their restrained character roles. Stanley Tucci is always so watchable. I always feel I am his character in films. I found the Cardinal Tedesco character, played by Sergio Castellitto interesting and reflective of the church. (Spoiler alert!). On one hand he was all for tradition, yet the rules didn't apply to him with his vape and arrogance. I found the ending a bit weak but entertaining. Felt more like a play. Very like 12 Angry Men.

Thought it was very good too. I get what people are saying about the ending but overall it didn't detract from what was a very enjoyable film. Made up somewhat for the disappointment of Gladiator 2.

I read the book which is quite good so I know the ending. Is this in the cinema or on streaming?

Saw it today - thought it was excellent. The performances were spot-on (especially Fiennes), there was a huge effort put into the visuals (someone watched Handmaid's Tale, I think, similar overhead shots), and although I had guessed the first half of the ending, I hadn't guessed the second half.

yeah The Handmaid's Tale came to my mind too while watching it

A good watch despite the ott/wtf/FFS (select as desired) ending.

For a previously unknown and raised in secret cardinal to be selected was hard enough to believe, nevermind the woke grenade he turned out to be.

A very strong cast showing just how good their acting chops are. Can see several Oscar nominations at the least.

I was a little put off by the tension building music at various points in the movie when nothing of note was going on though.

I saw this on Sunday night, one of the rarer occassions I get to the cinema these days, although there are films like Anora that I'd much rather get to see ahead of this.

It was grand. Well acted, well shot but I expected a bigger punch out of the ending. I knew the whole time that whoever got picked there would be a final revelation, maybe some kind of Keyser Soze reveal of something. So, while it was an interesting, and I jarring wrap up, it still felt very tame after all the build up up.
