Good riddance to one of the most sneaky, divisive and destructive leaders we ever had.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,104 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Well he did say he probably wouldn't still be in politics by the time he was 50.

Getting out 5 years early fair enough.

Good luck to him for the future.

Good luck to him. I doubt he'll be missed. Him and Coveney announcing they're moving on in the space of a week is two high ranking FG moving on from politics.

I thought that was a forgone conclusion after quitting the top job.

He was so successful in every ministry he held, he'll be an asset to whichever EU lobby group buys him 😉

Probably eyeing a run for President my guess

Like any bandit he has taken his money and run , a populist media whore who cared more about the opinions in rte and social media than representing the people

when the government tell the people what to do and think rather than the other way around democracy is dead

There are very few examples of former Taoiseachs sticking around the Dail for long after stepping down from the top job,(I think Albert Reynolds has the record of 8 years) It's a different story in the UK, where you had Edward Heath remaining in the commons for decades, and Winston Churchill more or less carried out in a box

    Wouldn't blame him.

Politics is entering a dangerous time. There's a lot of know it alls out there blaming you for everything, and many are willing to stand outside your family home and tell you so.

You're in a lose-lose situation. The public are getting harder to please, and disinformation on social media is rife.

He'll get a cushy pension, can go back to being a Dr if he wants. I'm sure he'll not be stuck for work. He's only 45.

When people say this about Leo, I genuinely don’t think they have a clue about our previous leaders at all. Charlie, Bertie and Brian would appreciate your views, no doubt.

And if the people don't like doing what they're told, they vote them out.... democracy.

Apparently there was a serious threat to his life from a right wing group while he was Tanaiste. I don't blame him for getting out if that's the case

Who can blame him for getting out of the toxic environment politics has become? No reasonable or right minded person would devote their time or expose their family to that.

I said he was “one of the” most…

Fully agree we have had a litany of scoundrels as Taoiseach.

You are very late to the party….

You've got one life to life, time to move on and do something else…

I was thinking that myself but I reckon it’s too early - as we can see from this thread alone, there’s a fair amount of Leo-hate out there - - needs a few years to calm down but certainly in the future -all depends on the quality of the rest of the candidates - certainly if they were like the last bunch of idiots, then he’d be a serious contender .

As we saw with Mary Robinson, if a person presents well to the electorate, even though they’re not well known, even the most popular and well known person (Lenihan) can be caught out - with a bit of help from Garret Fitzgerald , his mates and a live Q&A programme of course 😀

I think Leo will prove a much better leader than Simon ultimately. Obviously the tiktok Taoiseach will have a much shorter reign. They both liked a leak! I feel Leo had the national interest in mind when he was leader. Simon is a narcissist.

But it is crystal clear that Leo was not liked across the electorate.

Wishy washy interview. All hail the Great Leo.

Would like to have done more but had his hands tied by others.

Heaven forbid people don't eat meat every day of the week, what sort of a world would that be?

Ideally yes you vote them out , but not when the other options are a quasi political crime gang , and a bunch of fringe lunatics.

Those same people threatening him threaten many others too , people without 24 hour armed security details ,

you can tell a lot about someone by how they treat people who work for them and leo showed his distain many times to those people.

Do you reckon that Government policy and thought leadership relating to the future of the planet should be influenced by FG members paying membership and going out canvassing?

well said. I’m in no way party political but I’ve never had so much genuine loathing for a politician as I do for him, an absolute snake in the grass of an individual…. Never trusted him an inch. He did little to nothing in terms of improving the wellbeing and lives of ordinary Irish citizens…quite the opposite, almost at times he seemed to have a sneering contempt for us…I’ll always remember that ludicrous speech he gave.. not verbatim but it was something like..” people forget that St Patrick was young, single, male & undocumented “…. Yes Leo, because in the year 433 they had passports, didn’t they…. 👏🏼. Completely out of touch with the people here and what’s more he didn’t care and didn’t even go to any great lengths to hide that fact….

Worst Taoiseach in my lifetime…. By miles…. He won’t be missed by many…
