I'm hoping my car stays going for another while.

I may consider an EV as my next car.

I sometimes look at threads on here and they seem very confusing amd bickering goes on.

Can anybody give a step by step guide, please.

    Cost of home charger?

    Grants?

Time frame to have one installed?

Your house may have to be built after a certain year?

I know the next bit is asking the length of a piece of string.

Approx range of a 2md hand

Renault Zoe, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, EGolf or similar.

    Home charger.
Look at the home charger thread.

    Grants.
€3500. Applied by the dealer. You don’t have to worry about it. Only applies to new cars.

    Installation.
depends on the company. Can be a day, a week or a month. We can’t answer that. Wiring has to be safe to take the 32a load. Installer will decide if safe or not and offer upgrades if required. Based on your individual house. We can’t answer any further.

    Range.
look at the associated threads for each of those cars.

For range, look up whatever EV you’re considering on EV-Database. Be mindful they all have less range in cold weather and/or high speeds. All covered within the EV-Database range estimates.

If you know someone who has one it might be worthwhile having a chat.

    >Cost of home charger?

1400 euro -300 seai home charger grant.

    >Grants?

If buying a new car it's already in the price.

    >Time frame to have one installed?

Home charger can easily take 6 weeks at peak times but you can get it before your car.

    >Your house may have to be built after a >certain year?

It depends on technical things such as the wiring between ESB meter and house fuse board. Hard to know without real on site survey. 95% of houses are ok.

I know the next bit is asking the length of a piece of string

See EV database website. Many cars came in different battery sizes such as 40kWh, 60kWh which impacts range. Note older zoes may have a battery lease monthly payment to battery lease company so avoid any on lease or at least go in informed.

Main questions for you. Do you own your own home with off street parking?

What is your daily commute round trip in km?

What is your typical long weekend trip round trip in km?

Public charging on longer trips is main downside of EV ownerships so try get a big battery as there can be queues at peak times at public chargers.

The EV database is a handy enough resource, but one thing that frustrates me a little is that the difference between the "Cold Weather" and "Mild Weather" estimates spans a temperature range of 33 degrees - the cold weather figures are for conditions as low as -10, while the mild weather ones are for up to +23. The figures for city and mixed driving are pretty much immaterial for us - the daily commute is a round trip of only 32km, and a lot of weekend trips are still little more than 160km. But I'd really like to see figures included for highway driving in temperatures of say +1 or +2, which is slightly on the cooler side of what we tend to get in Ireland through most of the winter but is by no means uncommon. That would be pretty useful for me when I'm looking for a car to do a particular long trip on a regular basis with no more than one stop. At this stage, it's looking like a used Model 3 LR, which is at the (very) outer edge of the budget.
