    Hi all,

Currently looking at 7 seater SUV's. My wife and I have 4 kids, 3 are still in baby seats.

Really like the XC90s diesel but all in my price range are in and around 200,000km on the clock.

The interior and bodywork is still immaculate with all of them but I'd be slightly worried about that mileage.

Anyone know if XC90s a reliable past 200km?

It depends on how much mileage you're likely to do in it. If you're (say) going to do < 10k a year, it may well be a decent proposition for you. Because at 200k+, you're going to have to start replacing stuff and that could get expensive. It depends on the car though. Best to do some research on the model and get an idea of the kinds of things that need replacing and when.

Thank you, looking at 2019 which is supposed to be the most reliable version but still hard to gauge the cost of maintenance. Would also only purchase from a known dealer with a 1 year warranty which would offer some protection.

Realistically will be doing between 15,000-20,000kms a year given it will be only carrier that everyone can travel in together :)

my understanding is that given that mileage in 5 years it would suggest a lot of motorway, which is exactly what a diesel is for and if mileage was sub 80,000 I would be more worried!

It also means it’s likely not clocked which is reassuring.

Further to the above, if you were doing sub 10,000 a year I would warn against a diesel as it’ll cause you problems if not driven a lot

I'd really sooner have a well maintained car with 200k km on on rather than a poorly maintained car with 100k km on it or less. Service history is key here and I don't really see any excuse for not maintaining a service history in this day.

I've mentioned it here before (and can't find the video now) but I do recall a video on Youtube of two engines the same been dismantled - one with 65k miles on it that was poorly maintained and one with 165k miles on it that was well maintained. The one with 65k miles was in noticeably poorer state and had more wear.

if you can afford steer enough repairs bills every so often you will be grand ,unfortunately with any large prestige vehicle you are not going to get new car reliability with 200k km on clock- not stating the obvious here just that you need to be able to afford /justify that you are getting a prestige vehicle but it will cost more to run than a newer /average mileage vehicle

It'd be nice to think that a main dealer service history was worth something. I don't. I've had two episodes with main dealers, the latest being a 170k Nissan that the DPF went in and on further investigation found the cause being the same glow plugs in it since new. Two of them were down to stumps. Car serviced on the button every time with Nissan. Never did the glow plugs. Sent me lovely videos of the car at service time though.

The other was a similar situation wrt servicing, but this time the main dealer directly caused two NCT failures. One of which I had asked them to check out, but which they said wasn't what I thought it was. It was what I thought it was and an NCT fail.

So service history is a crap shoot imo. Might be indicative, might not.

And I'd far sooner have the 100k car. You might be unlucky with servicing (1 in 10 chance imo) but at 200k, you might still be unlucky and also have an iceberg of a maintenance bill heading your way in the next 50-100k.

A volvo with 200k km will have no issue esp just 5 years old and assuming a service history.

My brother has a 2018 V90 with over 300k on it and it has never had any issue. He gets it serviced in an independent dealer somewhere in dun laoghaire.

He has no intention of selling either.

If the price is right, go for it.

Thank you everyone for the replies

I was under the impression that high mileage in a diesel isn’t necessarily a bad thing, within reason obviously.

I was hoping there’d be a few XC90 owners who had it around the 200k mark and could report good or bad feedback but defining worth looking into further
