So why do it? It would make absolutely no sense

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Caustic

DCL is one of the worst finishers the league has ever seen and a sick note i cant see any reason for signing him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,777 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

If we got some of the decisions a certain team got today a certain county named poster would lose his ****!

We should never have sold Henderson! Feckin ETH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,441 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

I'd love to have Henderson instead of Onana. I think it was more on Ole than ETH though, it looked like we were phasing in Henderson for De Gea, but then Ole bottled the decision or Henderson got injured, can't remember 100%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭NITRO95

IIRC correctly Henderson had an illness that kept him out for a while and Ole decided after that to stick with DDG. By that point then it was clear Henderson wanted out to play 1st team football and nobody could blame him

Liverpools mid was very similar to ours getting bypassed, if we don't reinforce we'll be in trouble.

Did you not see how dangerous Mount was as a striker yesterday?

Sesko can't play every minute. If we are daft enough to get rid of Hojlund we'll need another striker. Otherwise its be toothless in the non-Sesko minutes or repeat the exact same mistake we made with Hojlund and flog Sesko to death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭NITRO95

I know everyone keeps saying Zirkzee isn't a 9 but you can be guaranteed hes gonna get plenty of minutes there this season. Sesko/Zirkzee as first & second choice is fine. We then have Chido or the possibility of Cunha or Mbuemo playing as false 9 like Mount yesterday but they've obviously more experience doing it than Mount. It's also possible RA will change the formation to suit if injuries or suspensions deprive of us of Sesko & Zirkzee. There's also the January window where if we need a CF we can get one. I'd be happy going with what we have currently and Hojlund leaving.

Chido isn't ready for the 1st team. It was needs must last season that he got some minutes. He would be better off on a season long loan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,274 ✭✭✭mobydopy

I don't see the need to go for a second striker this summer even if Hojlund leaves. After Sesko, we've got Zirkzee who can play there and we have Chido as well who I'm hoping will have a proper breakout season. Plus we've got the likes of Bruno/Mount/Cunha/Mbuemo who can do a job as a false 9. Without any European football, that should be plenty for next season.

Also Sesko has a fantastic injury record so no worry there either. Calvert Lewin is a complete waste of time, I can't see us going for him.

Focus should be on a midfielder and goalkeeper for the rest of the window

We have just had 2 years of people saying Hojlunds big problem was that he shouldn't have been thrown in at the deep end with no senior striker to rotate with, to learn from, to take the pressure of him.

Are we seriously going to repeat that exact scenario with Sesko?

Chido is not a serious option and Zirksee is barely a striker. Why not just find a cheap striker to come in and play a role?

While I wouldn't be a big fan of DCL, assuming availability, is he really a downgrade on Hojlund? Hojlund was absolutely brutal last season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭twinex

Hoijlund was bought by Utd at a low point and were only getting worse.
He was woeful in a poor poor team, but he always put in a shift while his confidence was being torn apart game by game. He didn’t score many but some of his goals were very tasty, technical and accurate.
He has had 2 chaotic and depressing years here where very few inproved. His contract could be likened to a poisoned chalice.

I hope he stays and we see a confident player playing a part in a functioning frontline.

I suppose the question is was he a victim of those poor years or a contributing part. Poisoned chalice talk is ott for me.

I'm not against him staying as a back up but he was truly abysmal last year. I know he's still young enough but I wouldn't be overly confident that he'll turn it around at United. He just seemed very limited at times.

Hojlund going on loan is the only way of making a few quid back off him and hoping he has a positive impact on loan. Otherwise he'll likely just hang around until his contract expires in a few years.

On Hojlund, I'd really like for him to succeed. He is apparently a United fan, wanted the move and he's always come across well in media. He has not been a Sancho, Rashford or Garnacho openly warring with the manager and the club. But he has been here two years. First year with 16 goals was okay for a young player moving to a new club, new country, new league. The second year was really bad. He went backward. He might still have a good career, but maybe not at United.

If the coaches who are working with him day in and day out are making a judgement that he has not got it, they cannot coach him, then okay. He wouldn't be the first young player United signed who didn't work out. The media noise seems to be that he will go on loan to AC Milan, maybe with an option or obligation to buy. Everyone wins if he goes there and rebuilds his career with a good season. Either he comes back with renewed confidence to make a difference for United, or he earns a permanent deal and United get a decent price.

The worst case is him staying at the club when the manager has no intention of using him. His career stagnates, any residual market value plummets.

The whole attack was truly abysmal last year. It's why the club have forked out over £200M on a new front three. Best for both parties that he departs this season though imo. He can go on loan and regain his confidence at Milan because it won't happen here.

We can hopefully get a confident player back that can contribute or one that can fetch us a few quid so we make something back off him.

But there's no point in having a back up who is rarely available.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

Hojlund may leave the club but I have a great deal of sympathy for him.

He was another victim of the Glazer ownership/stupid signings. No serious big club signs a 20 year old striker with 18 league goals in his whole career and throws him up front in the starting line up at one of the most high pressured clubs in the world.

In his first year, he did well in Europe to be fair and had a decent return in the league, 10 in 30, for a 21 year old. Perfect return actually for a young lad finding his feet and learning off a seasoned pro, think of some of our former greats, RVN, RVP, Rooney, Cole, etc. Last year, he was bad but he was bad in a bad side playing firstly under a dead man walking in ETH at the start of the season and then under Amorim who needs to show he has a bit about him this season.

It's probably best for all parties he does depart, especially for him to realise that there is actually a player there and fingers crossed he does well in his career.

As been pointed out above, he's not a mercenary. Stuck his head down, got his dream move and it just didn't work out. Wish him well.

If the choice was only loan or keep Raz then id keep him. There simply has to be completion for places, Zirks isn't a natural striker (not that Raz has shown to be either) and Chido is only a pup. Makes no sense moving him on unless its a permanent deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,049 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

But you're never going to move him on permanently unless he goes on loan to show teams he's worth buying. Otherwise he's just here until his contract either expires and he leaves or he signs a new deal with a pay cut.

It's seems certain that Boards is going to close soon. There are some great posters here & it would be a shame to break up the group. Maybe time to think about an alternative place to post.

www.discussions.ie seems decent, very new and reminds me of old school boards

Have been thinking that alright although I haven't followed the announcement thread for a while.

Could be a big week transfer wise.
Hojlund and Garnacho I could see offers accepted and deals mostly done this week. And I think that will trigger an offer for Baleba.

Would love to see Sancho and Antony get sorted this week but I reckon they are going to be crap August 31st moves.

Few from the fantasy sports arena have moved to Discord already.

Fingers crossed we could get something done for Baleba. Can play as the 6 or even the 8 if you wanted to go a little more defensive by partnering him with Casemiro/Ugarte.

Think himself and Mainoo can be a long term partnership that will flourish. While Mainoo still has ways to go he's got some skills that could make him effective from the 6 position if you wanted a more deep lying ball player to link play. Baleba is decent on the ball having played as a winger when younger and has the athleticism to be effective as a box to box 8.

If the transfer happens I think Baleba is the player whose the closest thing to a Roy Keane type midfielder in terms of style.
