I just don't see it in Collyer. Nothing stands out. I d fear him starting against any pl side

You seem to be the only one, all I see is praise, I thought he played well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Imo there is an element of bias towards a youth player. If he was younger I'd look more kindly on his potential, but he's 20. Imo if he really had something about him he'd have forced minutes last season.

He has good work rate and covers ground well, but I don't think his technical quality is anywhere near enough.

What makes you think it was real grass?

The astro pitch was mentioned about 20 times during the match. V

They laid real grass for the match, they have tried to sell it on as it has to be taken back up, no takers for it yet.

Reports say we've agreed to pay a fair bit more than the reported West ham agreement. Seems bizarre.

Think this is a poor buy if it goes through tbh. Spent way too much time injured to be a player you could think of relying on.

No bias here, I call out youth players who I think will never make it, I know Collyer isn't a Mainoo level youth but could easily be a squad player which we need.

Ten Hag likes him and has done well with Mainoo and Garnacho so there must be something there.

I just can't get past the thought that if there was something there, 20 year old Collyer would have made his debut at some point last season. We played eriksen at dm ahead of him. He didn't even come on as a sub. Not a minute.

I think he looks decent in terms of its the first we're really seeing him, but it's the level I'd expect of someone 2 years younger. How many player make their debut in professional football at 20 and make an impact? I have to imagine the number is small these days. More common in the 90s and before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,791 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

McTominay made his debut at 20, Kane looked nothing like the player he is at 20, Collyer only turned 20 in January its hardly an arguement to suggest he's not good enough.

would way prefer just doing a swap for dumfries. he has missed 12 games in his career through injury. plus there is no additional outlay.

At 20 ys old Paul McGrath was playing with Dalkey United, at 22 was playing LOI with Pats and almost 23 when he signed for United. Late developers are plentiful enough. Vardy played non league for a long time and he developed into a great striker.

Ya grass put down. It'll be put down again for the world cup. NFL players not happy, they've been crying out for grass pitches to replace the astro turf ones. NFL have said no but are doing it again for the World Cup over there and then reverting pitches back to astro.

I'm not saying is impossible. But most players who can play at pl level, upper pl level, will have played some minutes of professional football by 20.

And I don't see anything special in his game. He's never stood out in the couple of youth games I'd have seen him in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,695 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

Apparently Paul McGrath has posters of Collyer on his bedroom wall so you’d never know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,791 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I don't think many of us expected Mainoo to have the season he did, some players just catch the managers eye.

If Collyer gets 10-15 games next season he'll be happy.

The coaches see more than we do and the 1 thing I fully trust ETH on is his handling of young players.

But Garnacho was overplayed last season I hear you say, well obviously with all the injuries we had, any other season Garnacho gets rested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Everyone who watched mainoo knew he'd be a star very soon. It wasn't really a surprise. The people saying he wouldnt play and would be loaned out in January were the the insane one. Mainoo has been an earmarked player for years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,695 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

Mainoo had played the season before and in the very brief appearances he had, he definitely looked like someone who could be used the following season. It looked that way because it seemed like he was a natural due to his composure. Agree that people wouldn’t have expected his impact would have been as big as it was though.

Collyer could end up in League 1 on loan for the year, making all of this chat redundant. Until he plays in a competitive game, he’s just another lad making up the numbers on the tour. I think Mitch’s point is valid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,316 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

He may indeed end up on loan but I think he's rated a little bit more than someone making up the numbers (there are surely some that will be seen as making up the numbers to some degree).

I think it was quite significant that Collyer and Amass were in the starting team, an indication that they probably most likely / expected to be involved in the senior squad.

I only watched the fiest half, it was a very good tempo for a preseason game. Collyer looked quite at home and I was impressed. Amass stood out a little more, he looks a fantastic prospect. Both seem completely composed on the ball.

Anthony is a bit of a joke as a professional footballer,if he had any pride he would have gone away during the Summer and worked on his right foot……some people give him a pass because he ‘works hard’……

If he had any real interest in improving he should also have gone away and worked on his right foot during last Summer as well.

what does working on his right foot even mean? It's very hard to become proficient on your very weak foot once you get older. You can improve but not to the point where you can use it as easily as your dominant foot. I doubt very much that throughout his career coaches. saw his right foot and thought , yeah that's grand. Some people will never successfully use their weak foot no matter how much thru train.

That said I don't know one way or another whether he has or not been coached on his right foot

I would hope that barring injury Amad will have the right wing position at the start of the season. He looks very good.

There are too many there now so a move will have to happen with Sancho or Antony I'd say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,695 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

Six there and no two stand out players who you would hang your hat on to have a great season really. Hopefully Amad looks good when the season actually starts and Rashford shows he’s good enough too. Both are a maybe for now though. Obviously Garnacho is in the mix for both flanks as well.

The Sancho to PSG talk seems to have died down and not sure anyone takes Antony barring a loan deal which isn’t great. If he goes on loan you’d surely be footing the bill for half or more of his wages.

I think you are more likely to be right here than wrong but just a couple of things on him. He took a growth spurt over the last year or so I think. Was 5'9 and now 6'1 apparently. That's a big change in physique. He was obviously just a late developer.

In terms of the 2 games I've seen him now, a couple of things have stood out. He can play on the half turn and covers the ground really well. I'd like to see a bit more of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,791 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Yeh but nobody expected such a season, and anyone who says they knew he was gonna make the euros is a liar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,791 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

All the talk is he is going into the squad, nothing about loans, like I said we all Mainoo was good but nobody predicted last season and I repeat again hes not a Mainoo level player, he wont be first team.

Also mitchs point was hes not good enough because hes 20 and hasnt broken through (we only signed him about 2 years ago btw) and the couple of games hes seen him in the youths hes not impressed which is a ridiculous reason tbh, he also claims we're bias to youths, well we know mitch has a hatred for all things ETH so maybe hes bias to Collyer due to the praise ETH gave him, which again is as ridiculous as claiming we're bias.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Ffs it's got nothing to do with ETH. I just don't think Collyer has impressed. Stop dismissing everything I say as being a god damned agenda.

I think iqbal looked just as good as him in pre season and I never thought he was going to be good enough either.

If a player doesn't stand out for youths I doubt they will in the pl. I don't think it is an outlandish position. But agenda, right? Ffs.

People generally are very sympathetic to youths and more willing to see promise in them. We have a bias to want to see the kids do well. I didn't think that was an outlandish statement either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,791 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Read back mitch I said its as ridiculous as as claiming we are bias about our youths, I know its nothing to do with ETH I was just commenting on the suggestion that we are bias. I never rated Iqbal, Forson or Shoretire, theres no bias we just hope to god they do well and save us millions.

My original comment was you seem to be the only one whos not rating him (obviously others dont) and its spiralled into madness.

Take your point but a pro footballer should be looking to improve the weaker areas in their game if they have any interest in making the most of their career. While he is still poor in relative terms going forward AWB went away two Summers ago and worked with personal coaches to improve his crossing of the ball, and while still not great, that area of his game has improved.

Antony is obviously happy to collect the big wage without giving back in improved performances.
