Do you have to register a Leap Card?

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it is compulsory to register a Leap Card? If I buy a card & put credit on it can I use it straight away & continue to use it without registration? Leap Card website FAQ's & online digital assistant only highlight the benefits of registering they don't confirm if you have to. Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Its not compulsory, you can use it as soon as you top it up.

Registering helps because if you lose it, you can order a new card with the balance before losing it, on it

You don't have to, Leap Cards work just fine without registration. Even the Leap Card Top Up app for smartphones doesn't require a registration, although you will need to register a credit card if you want to use the app.

Personally, I have both my main and my backup Leap Cards registered, which saved my derriere when I lost my wallet a while ago. Also, I found that I can't add monthly bus passes here in Cork through the app, I have to go through the official website, but if you only use it with cash (or credit card) top-ups, you're all set without registration.

I forgot to also ask, if you start using it a Leap Card without registering it, can you go back at a later date & register it or is it the case once you start using it that's it has to remain unregistered. Is there a time window within which to register it?
