Hopefully Murray rides off in to the sunset without playing, and gives us a rest from all the drama. Between him and Djokovic……

    Confirmed Sabalenka pulled out

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,559 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Sad news about Sabalenka, big loss to the women's side. I think she'll win it one day though. Might have won it already if she wasn't banned in 2022.

I see that Kyrgios is commentating on Wimbledon, is he finished playing now and concentrating on commentating?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,899 ✭✭✭drury..

    Drama is part of it

The media the event and the players

    It's 50% entertainment and 50% drama

I actually laughed when I saw that.

The commentators weren't exactly complimentary of him as a player.....now he's one of their colleagues.... awkward 😂 😂 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭tiegan

He's been off injured for a good while, and says he is not retiring any time soon. He is a far better commentator than player, less of the drama!! Delighted to have him commentating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,842 ✭✭✭Floppybits

That's why I was wondering if he has given up on playing. I know he had a knee injury but he must be out nearly 2 years now and he doesn't seem to be any hurry to get back playing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Berrettini through in 4 sets I don't think many will want to face him!

Alcaraz being given a decent enough workout in first two sets against Lajal but running away with the third.

    Medvedev sailed through.

Drama on court during the tournament. Going on about retiring for years no thanks. He’s retiring, we get it.

Well ya but he's part of the occasion

They were a long time waiting for a British champ

The Andy drama won't last beyond the first match week and is almost needed during a week when there are very few upsets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Raducanu survived a break point, and now breaks herself. Fery looks gassed down break in 5th set shame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Back on serve in Raducanu match, nice tight contest so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Raducanu dominates tie breaker. One set up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,048 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Kyrgios looked very odd when talking between matches with Tim and Claire.... staring into space really weirdly!

I'd take him commentating any day over the histrionics on court though!

Did I hear that Azarenka is out as well? There's a lot of fallers before day 1 is even over!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Solid from Raducanu 7-6, 6-3. Physically she looked good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

saw the second set of the raducanu match as it’s what is shown on premier sports. It’s better than nothing but yes she seemed good, which given her injuries is good to see. Not sure how far she can go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Elise Mertens (winnable) in the next round seemingly.

I can't see her going too deep but depends on the draw and her fitness. Few big names dropped out already on ladies side. Nice to see Osaka looking happy and winning too.

Murray if he plays tomorrow has Machac (tough draw imo).

If anyone happens to have a ticket for this year's Wimbledon that they're not using, I'd be very grateful for the opportunity of taking off your hands....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Sinner looked to be coasting (two sets up) but Hanfmann has taken the third set! Should add a warning...Andrew Castle on comms....

Seeing that clip of Murray training today....I wouldn't count on him making it on court tbh. Shame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Sinner kicked things up in set 4 (with the roof) decent match just under 3 hours.

if you lose to clowns I wonder what that makes you haha. Thought he was a dope in that doubles game against Fed and Nadal but gave him the benefit of the doubt but a dope he is. Talented but not a player that will be remembered in 10 years.

Murray out of the singles, will now only play doubles with Jamie.

Defending ladies champion Vondrousova down a set to a player ranked in the 80s I think, and looking less than convincing in her first round match.

ETA and down a break first game in the second set.

    And she's gone.

Didn't look remotely at the races for most of the match that I saw, I didn't realise she'd been injured recently.

But her opponent played great tennis, delighted for her!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,423 ✭✭✭✭josip

Djokovic serving for the first set. After a long 4th game where he was eventually broken Kopriva seems to have given up in this set.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,842 ✭✭✭Floppybits

How is Djokovic's knee holding up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,423 ✭✭✭✭josip

Hard to know. At times he has slid well on it and looks like he trusts it.

There have been other times where he has slipped and then he's been walking gingerly on it for a bit. But that could be the old Djokovic rope a dope trick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

This Boulter Vs Maria match is fun.

If Boulter could improve her first serve percentage and reduce her unforced errors it would help…takes it on tiebreaker! (Was 1-4 in games at one stage).

Djokovic sailing through unsurprisingly. Zverev easy win too. Rublev gone.

Maria must be an absolute nightmare to play - I've been watching since 4-1 and i think I've seen one ground stroke and one smash that weren't extreme slice shots. I don't think I've ever seen anyone at that level play without ever using topspin!

I see the reigning ladies champion Vondroušová out. She had retired recently in a match in Germany so I am guessing wasn't totally fit?

Boulter battled her way past Maria, very enjoyable match. 7-6, 7-5.

Now watching Draper he lost first set against Ymer but picked things up and now up a break in the second set.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Incredibly tricky (even at 36) with that slicing, didnt give away many easy points either, you can see why she reached a semi at Wimbledon a few years back. Boulter had to battle for it.

Draper taken second set so level with Ymer. Warning Andrew Castle involved in commentary team...zzz.

Ha I don't mind McEnroe he is entertaining and knowledgeable at least....Andrew Castle is Alan Partridge brought to life, the nonsense he spouts.

Henman also isn't exactly bursting with charisma either.

Draper up a break in the third already.

Oh I'd take Henman any day over McEnroe - and even Castle sometimes! I cannot abide the droooning on with absolute nothingness of McEnroe (he's not too bad so far this evening in fairness)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,048 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Draper looks a lot more like he believes he can win this than Ymer....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Looks like it Ymer was playing really well but Draper now feels very much in the driving seat. Breaks again to take third set!

Draper match into a 5th set...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Norrie looks to be coasting through up a double break in third. He has been in rotten form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

And up a break phew. Serves it out 6-3. Much tighter that I was expecting. Cameron Norrie in next round.

    Britain gets a new hero

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,899 ✭✭✭drury..

I used to naively think McEnroe was good

He seems to be just dialling it in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,048 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

So two Brit double headers in the next round... the excitement will be off the scale 🙄

In fairness I'm looking forward to the Dart/Boulter game, should be a good one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,842 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Surprised Boulter wasn't on centre or number 1 court after all she is the British Number 1. I expect the brit double header will be on a show court.
