The mother has some neck on her looking for more money. £64,000 and she isn't happy. I say the reason she is looking for more money is because he had a drug debt and now they are looking for it to be paid by her because he is dead

I wouldn’t say you are too far wrong. Even allowing for the cost of repatriation of the body which I believe is circa 8,000-10,000…. Spain ——> UK. That plus normal funeral costs would not exceed what has been raised, not close.

She will probably be on Celebrity big brother.

During the time he was missing, it seems that many family members remained in Tenerife. Consequently, they likely depleted a significant portion of their funds as nothing is cheap these days. Based on the circumstances, I doubt that she is seeking money for her own benefit. Let’s avoid making hasty conclusions. He appeared to be a typical, unruly young man from a working-class background, perhaps lacking the maturity to fully understand his actions. While there are numerous stories about him, given the opportunity, he might have turned his life around later on. It’s a tragic situation, and may he rest in peace.

    the gofundme says….

“We are working with agencies to arrange Jay's repatriation to the UK and the remaining funds, along with any future donations will be used to help with this if needed and to pay for Jay’s funeral costs back home. We want to give our boy the send-off he deserves so please do continue to share and support our fundraiser however you can.”

A vague enough statement but it doesn’t mention compensating people who were potentially out of pocket having helped in some way…

It's not really that vague though is it. Keep giving. Which is really cheeky. The woman probably wasn't thinking straight but doing that probably brought a lot of trouble to her door at a time like this.

I reckon people might be overthinking this. Maybe that European company that flew over to search for Jay a couple of weeks back is footing a hefty bill. Jay’s funeral is shaping up to be quite the event, so perhaps they’re covering those expenses. And let’s not forget about all the family members and their children who were out in Tenerife, to search for Jay. If they’re a working-class bunch, that money could’ve been a lifeline during the month they spent there. Honestly, some people are just giving this family a hard time because they’ve got issues with Jay. But fear not, Gofundme will keep an eye on things!!

the go fund me money was to help find him not give him an 18k gold send of ffs! Anyone that donates to those things without knowing where exactly the funds are going is not the brightest.

Who's giving him an 18k gold send off? You don't have to contribute. Some people might want to pay for him to have a decent send off. That's their own prerogative. The trump shooter families have been handed millions. It's just how strangers offer sympathy sometimes.

I'm always amazed by how much negativity and opinions people hold towards strangers that have died in the public eye. Not your son. Not your problem.

I’m always amazed how naive some people are. Funny old world eh. Donate if you feel so strongly 👌🏻

What about the people who die and the family don't court the media for donations and have the burial they can afford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,606 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I think "unruly" is being very kind.

But hey at least they found the trial amusing. Not to mention the Snapchats he sent boasting about having stolen a Rolex. I don't see many signs of him turning his life around.

The mum still trying to run up the go fund me, predictably...if you believe the majority of thr remaining money is going to go on a funeral, more fool you and everyone giving money to the family.

A fool and their money will soon be parted

Best description for people donating to this

does she not have to pay for the team brought in from the Netherlands? I imagine transport/accomodation/specialist equipment and dogs might have cost a fair bit.

The CEO of LBT came out in defence of the mother and advised the repatriation costs are upward of 20k.

The man who was attacked came out in defence of Jay. Jay was also the last person listed with the lesser charges of all which seems to make sense as he was only present at the scene.

Seems like a normal young lad to me caught up with a bad crowd who was turning his life around and had a full time job.

I’d like to say we’ve all been there but some people haven’t grown up in working class areas and think their sh1t doesn’t stink and don’t understand what it’s like to mix with a bad bunch.

And fwiw 19/20 was the age I started moving away from the less desirable people I befriended in my teenage years. Chap had his whole life ahead of him.

Label him a scumbag if you want because you lack understanding but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. RIP young man.

Why would the British government not arrange repatriation of the body? Is that not a done thing?

Have I not heard stories in the past of the Irish government doing this?

I don't think this lad had any intention of turning his life around, going by the new friends and acquaintance's he was hanging out with on holiday

Isn't this what travel insurance is for? Am I the only mug who bothers with it?

His family aren’t courting the media. A friend of his set up the gofundme page and his family offer staggered interviews to the media because everyone is interested in this case. They’ve done considerably well as a family considering all the media attention around them.

All well considered points. It’s nice to see others are being objective here. Would I have liked the guy? Probably not, but wasting ones Saturday concerned about people donating to his family says more about the people posting than Jays family. We the public know very little about the costs involved with finding Jay Slater.

When I was his age I used to walk home from Dublin City Centre to Lucan because I’d spent my bus fair on a McDonalds after a night out. I never took drugs or really drank for that matter but I was immature and did plenty of stupid things. Jay did a stupid thing walking home and there is no credible news source apart from drivel news and gossip sites to say he stole a Rolex. I doubt very few people on the club scene in Tenerife own a real Rolex anyway.

His inquest has been postponed as his friends cannot be found and also the guys from the Air BnB cannot be found

Preston Coroner’s Court heard on Wednesday that traces of drugs, including cocaine, ketamine and ecstasy was found in Mr Slater’s body and pathologists concluded his death from head injuries was consistent with a fall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,117 ✭✭✭Ray Palmer

Were they really his friends? It sounds a lot more like they were people he was put in contact with. The daily mail released video. He was bragging about a Rolex he stole off somebody and was expecting to get 10K for it and that is why he went to the house.

It appears the mother wants to get more answers about what happened then after he left. Doubtful the watch was genuine and he probably had no money to get a taxi back and decided to walk home and fell while doing so. It is sad for somebody to die so young and he would have time to turn his life around.

The consulate can and will help. But this is more logistically than financial.

But no there is no written rule that a citizens repatriation expenses will be covered by whatever government.

He only knew them a couple of days meeting them there. Probably would never see them again after he went back to the UK.
