Buddy of mine is trying to get licenced on k95 in .243, already has his dads old 243 remington 700 i think, and the super wants him to give up the old gun before he'll grant the new licence. Any solutions? South dublin city. Hes 30 years plus with multiple firearms and never had any issues previously. Thanks

What is his reason for a second 243?

It is absolutely doable to licence multiple guns of the same caliber, but you do need a good reason for each.

IE a 308 for F class is an insanely heavy beast and wholly unsuitable for the field, so a second 308 which is suited for hunting would be very doable.

But 2 243s would beg the question(since it is primarily a hunting caliber), what reason would he need both that one could not fulfill?

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

fox shooting with 58gr Vmax in one rifle. 90+gr weight for deer stalking in the second rifle ? Different zeros ?

I had 2 restricted lever action rifles at the same time. One for open and the other for scoped competitions..

Just sort the reasons you need both firearms.

Iron sight target shooting with thr k95, not a suitable rifle for deer culling in woodland areas, and a rem 700 with scope for hunting, is what hes arguing. There is a precedent clearly from other users

If one is solely licensed for target shooting and the other is solely licensed for hunting, and they are demonstrably not suitable for the others purpose, then I can't see an issue.

A mate of mine has 2 243’s. Same make. One for fox shooting with a night vision scope. The second with a day scope for deer hunting. It took a little arguing in the legal sense to make things clear but he’s got them.

One of the big problems is that we, licenced firearms owners, are dealing with people who frankly have no knowledge or training in firearms. Too many assumptions are based on movies eg, silent silencers, Often we come up to the remark “that it is policy”. Well and good but policy is not the law. Something that needs to be pointed out occasionally in a robust manner.

I've four 22LRs and didn't have any problems at all. The FO asked for an explanation for the second but I just sent in the third/fourth and they were approved no bother.

First they came for the socialists...

Rifles aren't licensed for a specific purpose by default. That condition would have to be manually applied to a license.

Eg If you apply for a license for say fox control. It's perfectly legal to bring that to the range. Either for the purpose of training/practise, or even competition.

I had a licence like that, manually add to the licence "Fox and Target Only"

It was on the conditions of the licence (not actually printed on the licence).

It was a deer legal calibre but I didn't have a deer license at the time. When I got the deer license I then had to request the conditions to be updated.

Exactly. Those conditions can and get applied. But not by default. Without that condition, you’d have been able to get the deer license and away you go.

I would use any of that as justified a second calibre. Even if it had a usage condition, they control them.

He got sorted. Super initially was reluctant then my mate explained that he had 30 years with no issues of firearm ownership and the gun was safer with him than anyone else. Super agreed and granted the 2nd licence

I've 2 service rifles in .308. I had to explain 1 was for pre 1955 classic rifle matches and one for post 1955 classic rifle matches.
