    Hi,

Can anyone give me an idea about lodging a US tax refund cheque in an Irish bank? I am banking with AIB and An Post.

Or is there any other place where I can do this? Any useful ideas are welcome!

    Thanks.

You need to go to a cashier at the counter and they will lodge it for you by converting it to euro - at least thats the way it used to be. Cheque will probably take about 10-15 days to clear.

Update: AIB received the cheque and notified me they will not proceed as my account is new. Terrible!

Would travelling to the US and getting one of those 'check cashing' places to give you cash for it (for a percentage) be an option?

My parents get foreign dividend cheques (US and UK) a few times a year. There's absolutely no issue in lodging them to their Bank of Ireland account. I just go into my local branch (which isn't their branch), queue up and lodge with the cashier. The UK ones show up in their account instantly, the US ones about three days later.

The OP is talking about IRS cheques and these are notoriously difficult to get cashed outside the USA.

I lodged an IRS refund with my Credit Union a couple of years ago. Took a few days to clear but no hassle. Think they charged €15 euro on a $2k cheque.

When I was in the US I banked with Chase. They have an excellent feature where you can just take a photo of the cheque to lodge it, then just destroy the hard copy. Very handy if you’re not physically in the country. Kept it for a while when I returned to Ireland, then used it to deposit my apartment deposit refund cheque. Then just transferred the balance to my Irish account using Wise. Not helpful if you don’t still have a US account though.

Update: BOI assured to handle the check, but I dont have any account there. So I am trying to open there and its been one month they are just asking for docs and docs every week. Terribly they reply any email after every 10 days or more. Its terribly slow in Opening account with BOI.

I had no problem lodging US Treasury/IRS cheques to my BOI account, did it in-branch a couple of times in the last few years

US Treasury cheques cannot be processed electronically (kid you not) which is why while banks accept US $ checks they can't process these types of cheques. So they essentially would need to send them phyiscally via the local federal reserve to process and well we are in Ireland.

If you go into a PTSB branch you will see flyers on the cash desks telling you that is the reason why they don't deal with US Treasury cheques.
