This is the ceiling above our fireplace surround (stone) - we needed to remove coving as it had a big chunk out of it that previous owners cut to allow cables for TV mounted on fireplace. While removing coving, a chunk of ceiling fell with it - need to fix but don’t know how, seems like paper below and the depth is decently large. What are the materials in the ceiling (what am I look at) and how doya recommend fixing so it is back to smooth for painting. Called coving specialist and not free to install for months so want to DIY it for now.

It's just plasterboard, where the nail is is a beam it's nailed to. There will be another one to the right of the hole so if you want cut a square piece out to the centre of the beam so you can nail a new piece onto the beams each side then just skim over it with plaster. Easy enough if you are handy with diy. A hardware shop might have a damaged sheet of plasterboard and sell you it cheap. Bring the picture so they know what you mean. Or you could just try and fill it with a filler if you don't want to go to the bother of cutting it.

Get a wall patch some filler allow to dry and repaint it?

Ok great, thanks for the answers. I’m not handy with DIY but my partner is, I’m thinking if we get a smooth enough finish we could forget about putting up new coving on the fire surround.

So is this pink stuff just coloured plaster? (Looks more pink irl than in this photo)

Yeah, the pink stuff is just plaster that's skimmed onto plasterboard. Go to a proper hardware shop not the likes of Woodies and they will give you what you need to just fill it.
