That’s exactly it. All of them are decent players, but completely overhyped.

Sourhgate set them up in such a way they’re difficult to break down, and have enough quality to hit a team with a sucker punch. Which is what they’re good at.

What are they not good at? Controlling the game. The simply don’t have the type of player in midfield that can get on the ball, control the tempo of the game, prod the opposition, force them to work, play through the lines, link defence and attack in seconds. Just don’t have them, don’t produce them.

The one time in 60 years when they had a player that could do that, they stuck Scholes out the left wing and left Carrick on the bench so the “world class” Gerrard and Lampard, who were more number 10’s than a central midfielder, could be on the pitch because they just had to be. An Italian or Spanish coach would have played Scholes and Carrick, played either Gerrard and Lampard in front of them and told them to run amok, and replaced them with the other with 25 to go keep up the tempo. Typical England, picked the team on hype than necessity.

Rice isn’t that type of player, very good box to box player, cost 100m, and Arsenal had to use Jorginho to be the link man. Bellingham had Kroos and Modric behind him, no way he could do their job. Foden has vision but is a number 10 and has De Bruyne, Kovacic and Rodri behind him at club level. Mainoo seems best placed but is young and has no-one at club level to show him the ropes. Gallagher and TAA wouldn’t break into the top 100 midfielders in the world.

If you don’t control the ball, you don’t control the game. England just don’t have midfielders that can do that, never seem to have them, and the ones they do have are completely overhyped or wouldn’t make the team of the bigger nations.

In all honesty, for all the talk after the final of being better on paper, when it comes to actually playing the game, has one English player played better than their Spanish counterpart?

Hype and lack of tactical and technical ability. England do both brilliantly, that’s why they fail so often.

It's over nearly a week now, after the first round of games it did drag a little bit, it wasn't as good as 2021, still better than 2016, think that was the worst tournament I can remember, really rancid, anyway here's all the goals again, some brilliant finishes.

Damn straight. Or do you have examples of Irish fans involved with things like Heysel? Lansdowne Road riots? Virtually every tournament inflicting violence or having to have their beer watered down because they can't handle it?
