Sorry, I am not a tax expert. Maybe a query directly to Revenue would get the answer for you.

Anybody with an Inster already - just relaying some info I've been sharing over the last few days in the group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hyundaiinster/

Have been having issues with AC charging being capped at 1.5kW after charging for anywhere from 5-90 minutes (or sometimes not at all) since early April - and last night my charger's breaker tripped and I'm no longer able to AC charge (with Zappi or with the granny lead).

Car is in with the dealer now. Found afterwards that there's already a service bulletin up for my VIN affecting AC charging that wasn't there when I checked last (around when I got the car on Febrary 20th). I'll make sure the dealer has applied it after my car is repaired, hopefully soon...

Keep an eye out for that charging throttling behaviour, and get in touch with your dealer if you're having issues. Maybe see if they can do that update in the bulletin if they haven't already.

What is it with Korean cars and their ICCUs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭Phibsboro

Ran my VIN through it and sure enough I get the same 2 as yourself. Does anyone know what the usual form is here - should the dealer be contacting owners? Should we be contacting the dealer? Will they apply the fix if we do?

Honestly, I've no idea. I'll have to ask about it when I'm chatting to them next (only saw the above after I'd already dropped it off). Hopefully that won't be too long…

It won EV of the year

Interesting that the Kia EV3 won world car of the year.

After all these recalls/updates/fix attempts to the Ioniq 5 ICCU - they're still failing - and now the Inster ICCU..

Will Hyundai Ireland replace the ICCU for free should it fail after the 5 year full warranty runs out on these cars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,287 ✭✭✭Meesared

Might be getting ahead of yourself, we don't know if this will be an ongoing thing or a once off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭xboxdad

The Inster will be our 3rd Hyundai group EV since 2020. It is going on since years with both KIA and Hyundai and it's being swept under the carpet. Would like to keep our Ioniq 5 for another few years and would like to keep our Inster for more than 5 too. …depending on the answer to this question.

KIA goodie bags for the motoring journalists must be top notch 😂

They have designed a new iccu component which will replace the current version with the design flaw. Recalls are underway in the US. Presumably Europe will follow in due course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭xboxdad

That'd be great! …but all ICCU related recalls (I had 3 already) were about "update software; check for error code, if present, replace fuse and ICCU". (of course for the vast majority of cases there was no error code)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,052 ✭✭✭Exiled Rebel

I understand that but hopefully the newly designed component eradicates the issue.

I hadn't noticed this, then I don't drive much, I just use the Type 1 granny cable.

I top it up every couple of days is all, how could I check?

Also that website for recalls etc. doesn't report any info at all on my VIN

The ICCU on my Inster 49kWh with V2L failed after 2000 km. I'm in Spain. It took 5 weeks for the replacement to arrive at the dealership. The failure mode was the AC charging just stopped working. Now I've managed another 500km and I'm stuck at the roadside once again. There are now several faults - it won't charge with AC (again!) and there are different messages on the dashboard and DTC codes U1116, U1128 and U1118. I now also get a loud 'water pump trying to pump air' kind of bad noise coming from under the bonnet. Coincidentally, this problem started just after I had left the car parked on an uphill slope for about 15 minutes. Could it be that the workshop that replaced the ICCU didn't bleed all the air out of the battery / motor / ICCU / inverter cooling circuits? Anyway, a call to Hyundai has left me in the position that I mustn't drive the car and wait for a 'long distance recovery service' to take my car back to the dealership where they sold me the car and replaced the ICCU in the first place. My Inster is spending more time off the road than on the road. I'm feeling 2 things: the ICCU's are flaky on the Inster and the dealerships don't know how to fix them properly.

Did you ask them (or are you planning to) the question: What happens if the ICCU fails beyond the 5 years warranty? I'd say it's pointless to ask the dealer as they have no authority over this whatever they think would happen. Hyundai Ireland should be able to give an official response.

Just to point out I'm in Spain, so perhaps the goalposts are in a slightly different place here - then again, we're all in the EU club so hopefully well-protected as consumers. Anyway, if the car continues with its current record of (un)reliability, which is for the moment is worse than a Land Rover, I'll be selling this car just before the 5 year anniversary. And people say that the China-made cars have quality issues - sheesh…

For what it's worth, I'll ask about the ICCU warranty beyond 5 years. The first ICCU failed within about 4 weeks of taking delivery of the car. It's not certain yet that the ICCU has failed again, but there's clearly something very wrong with the car at this moment in time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 marcus_j

I think the ICCU not only charges the 12V battery but also charges the high voltage / traction battery when you are charging on AC. It may also do the V2L stuff (?). If your ICCU goes pop it may be that you can still charge your car on DC (that is what happened in my case). I'm hoping that there will be a recall in Spain when the redesigned ICCU hardware becomes available here - I presume that the ICCU that they put in as a replacement 2 weeks ago was still the old, dodgy hardware.

I see the official Hyundai Inster accessory guide includes VTL options for 'Europe general, UK and Denmark'.

Thanks for the link. It doesn't mention my failure mode which was that the AC charging stopped working, but the DC charging still worked. This needed an ICCU replacement.

The stealership called me yesterday evening to say my Inster is 'fixed' just by doing some software updates. This was after it started up with dire dashboard messages on key-on about DC-DC charging, it refusing to AC charge (again!) and loud, nasty, continual 'dry pump' noises from under the bonnet. I'm particularly sceptical that the awful dry pump noise has a software-only fix.

The dealership hardly forgot refill some coolant after having the car in the first time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 marcus_j

Well, I must say that's what I was thinking. The coolant tank level still mid-way between MIN and MAX, but if they refilled the header tank but didn't properly bleed all the air out, perhaps air just moved from, say, the ICCU at the back of the car (I think it's under the back seats?) to the front of the car (where the coolant pumps are under the bonnet?) when I parked the car pointing uphill on a steep hill for about 15 minutes? Maybe? Anyway, I will pick the car up again tomorrow and will be sure to let them know if the car is still making that most un-EV-like terrible noise. If it's not making a bad noise, I will repeat the parking-on-a-hill test, just to make sure. I really don't need a repeat of this drama when I'm on my next roadtrip on a bank holiday weekend.

My car is in with the dealer now in Swords for just over a week (over the long weekend), diagnosis now confirmed it needs ICCU replacement, I'm at ~5000km. They're planning to have it done by Tuesday, waiting on the part.

Dug into the service manual out of curiosity and saw that there's multiple part numbers for the ICCU - including V2X and non-V2X.

The specs for my VIN state

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 cohaolain

The specs specs for my VIN state:
    OBD(ON BOARD CHARGER)_ICCU: "11KW+NONE V2X"

In parts lists I see there's an equivalent "11KW+V2X" version. So looks like that part selection from factory decides the V2L/V2X availability. Noticed also that base spec in Germany appears to be similar non-V2L arrangement.

References on there too to a 2026 Inster with 5 seats…

Anyway - not super chuffed to be out of my car even for (looking like) ~2 weeks. Hope they, or somebody, cracks the ICCU open and sees what went pop.

It's incredibly disappointing that Hyundai would allow another brilliant wee car in their range to be affected by the dreaded ICCU failure. You'd think they would make sure that particular brand-tarnishing element was well behind them before putting out another vehicle and creating excitement in the market.
