Reseeding question

Hello, I wanted to reseed a field using a direct drill with no ploughing or power harrowing involved as too many stones would be pulled up.

I was wondering what would be the right way to go about this. The field got limed last year. I was thinking, spray off the current crop of silage that’s on it now and then in 2 weeks cut and bale that. Then apply fertiliser and stitch in the grass, it’s clover we’re sowing. I was wondering about the fertiliser part, If I spread slurry before seeding would it affect the drill and if I spread after would it smother the new grass trying to sprout. Never even attempted reseeding before so any advice would be welcome.

Using gran lime on a small reseed, usually go with ground lime so not sure about when to apply, after it's tilled or before? Does it matter? Thanks

Both. Could be just me but if I disc the lime in then it mixes with the sprayed off vegetation. I till the fert in so that no matter what rain falls after sowing, it won't wash off the field

Different reseeding question, now. Is there any difference in cultivation methods in your opinion?
In the past we always ploughed, landleaveler, planted. Recently we started disking 2 runs, power harrow 1 run plus then planted with a one pass.

Perfectly happy with both of these, but both take a while and are expensive.

A one pass is called a one pass for a reason, how successful is doing straight into a burnt off field with a one pass and planting? Or even does it need some cultivation before that?

I’ve done both with equal success. A couple of factors.

If there’s stones then the plough needs to stay in the shed. If the field needs levelling then the plough and land leveller is the job.

After that I’ll leave to the resident expert @Reggie

Picking stones today after ploughing and a run of a disc harrow big stones needed the bucket to lift them

Mostly I find ploughing the best way over all for that reason and also turn out a better job overall but leaves it more tender for a period.

Howdy.

Ploughing is fine if the field is terribly rough but it takes alot of work to get a field level again after a plough unless you have a great ploughman which are getting hard to find. Usually it's not sorted fully till its reseeded a second time.

Ploughs will bring it everything. Along a ditch you will have a world of roots. Field will look like a snooker table when done with a landleveler but after a year or so when it settles it can be very uneven. We normally run discs deep after a plough to try to combat this.

Discs after spraying work best overall for the customers here. Only snag is you have to leave the field 2 weeks or 3 is better. It allows the root structure to completely die so when you disc that the top sod will break up.

A powerharrow is a secondary cultivator not a primary so I'd shouldn't be used straight into lay ground. It came be tho.

Easiest way for me to explain is if the ground isn't cultivated then the powerharrow spends 80% of the time cutting up the sod with 20% making a seedbed. If its cultivated then it can spend 80% on the seedbed.

Just around here the two runs of the disc plus a run of the powerharrow one pass is the sweetspot.

I’ve a couple of acres sprayed off a week now for a reseed. I was going to spread Granlime as it’s in too awkward a spot for ground lime to be spread. How many bags/acre would be recommended? And would it be spread before or after disc harrow?
Also, would ye recommend 2 or 3 bags per acre of 10/10/20 at sowing? Thanks

Won't matter really with granlime.

Min of 2 bags of granlime and also you could give it 2 bags of 10 10 20. With another bag after first grazing.

I usually spread all that between the discing and powerharrowing.

You'll need the 2 bags of lime regardless of soil test as you'll need to counter the acidic sprayed off grass.

Ground lime goes out before discing. Gran lime after is the rule I use. That's if its possible

Would normally use the ground lime but I'm a few spots where it isn't always easy to get to with ground usually go with 3-3.5 bags of gram lime its not over expensive maybe 220 a tonne.

When you say the powerharrow is a secondary cultivater, would it work ok as the sole cultivater if you gave it several runs of it?

I would love to buy the equipment to do my own reseeding but cant buy a whole fleet of equipment. I wonder would just a powerharrow do a good job or would that be a mistake.

One run of a powerharrow is enough.

Multiple runs if a powerharrow makes the top look good but has no real benefit.

As a rule it would work but it's hard on the powerharrow to go into lay ground plus you'll leave alot of trash on the top layer.

Think a disc harrow would be a better machine for a farmer doing his own seeding there would be less maintenance with it. Two runs of a disc harrow leaves a good bed.

Anyone used eagle spray? I reseeded a field last year and I see some dock leaves just starting to appear so wondering should I hit it with some spray? I have it closed up for a second cut at present so would be a good time to hit it now aslong as the spray doesn't check the growth too much

Whats the general order of events when tilling the ground for seed. After ploughing, do you harrow then pull a land leveler if needed or would you pull the leveler on it after ploughing and then harrow it?
