Buying a cheap runabout for an elderly person

    Hi Folks,

Bit of advise please. I need to buy a replacement runabout for my mother. She is an elderly driver, does very little mileage just within a 10/15 mile radius to get to shops/village etc.

I have to pay for it and only have a budget of 3k- was thinking a Micra or Yaris 07 or 08.
Any ideas, call outs, who to go to? Ideally limerick/Clare/Tipp area. She will be only driving for another 2/3 years id say.

    Thanks!

    what car is she replacing?

Familiarity can be important to elderly people, so maybe a fresher version of what she has could be the right way to go.

    Yaris are very reliable.

    She might consider an automatic.

I have seen a few older drivers managing to extend their driving years by switching to an automatic.

Not having a clutch and no worries about cutting out seems to make them more confident.

If you’re a novice car buyer, I’ve linked the buying guide thread below. Old thread but the info in it is all still relevant.
Donedeal is probably your best bet. Asking people you know if they know anyone selling a car is good too.
There is still a lot of old school people out there - I regularly see ads on the notice board in Super Valu and my local petrol station.
As Allinall said, the same as what she is replacing is probably your best bet.

As she is doing such little mileage, make sure it's a petrol car and not diesel.

My mum would be similar in her limited driving and she gets around in an Opel Corsa.

Thanks all. She had a Peugeot 207 but the head gasket is gone. She has had manual all her life so I’d stick with that. Thanks for linking the guide-I’ll check it out.

Nice- thanks Bazz. Never thought of a picanto. Anyone know regarding reliability? Are Picanto’s ok on that front? Thanks all.
