I'm wondering if BJJ is the best for self defence? I did a beginners weekend in Krav Maga in 2010 but it wasn't for me. I'd like to get back into self defence and torn between boxing and bjj.

Its highly unlikely you'll ever need it but yes it's good.

Maybe do Boxing and BJJ together and see which one you enjoy more.

I think both very viable. Comes down to preference really. The style, the gym, the people...

Why are you looking to learn self defence?

What are you looking to defend against?

What drew you to Krav Maga in the first place?

Are you interested in BJJ specifically or just self defence (or both)?

Any effective grappling art is good for self defence. Any effective striking art is good for self defence.

Effective arts in the above mean they train with resisting partners, with "contact". ie they spar.

Thought it was one of the worst. You'd never want to be bringing someone down to the ground while defending yourself. You'd just be waiting to get a kick to the head.

I'm assuming this is against multiple opponents? Pretty hard for a lad to kick you in the head when you're on his back.

Realistically, you're in trouble against multiple opponents no matter what style you're proficient in. BJJ is particularly bad for multiple opponents. Theoretically boxing or another striking art would be better in this scenario but realistically, it wouldn't be much better. You'd have a fighting chance but the liklihood of you being able to box your way out of an encounter with a load of lads all over you is low.

For one-on-one self defence, it's pretty good. As Mellor said above, any martial art where you're training with resisting opponents is going to be effective.

It's why BJJ is one of the base arts that has been, and continues to be, extremely effective in MMA. BJJ, Wrestling, Boxing, Kick Boxing, Muay Thai etc.
