I have a 40kw Leaf. I am looking at a daily commute in next few months of 264 km return trip.

What would be the best ev to look at for this daily range, thinking tesla model 3.

    Thanks

What are u getting range wise at the mo, at waht average speeds?

I was getting 161 from my 30 kw leaf before the % drop after 80,000 kms

    Any chance of destination charging

you will struggle with that commute in a Leaf40 - depending on the actual route. But in my old Leaf 40 - realistic range was at best 260km in summer and about 220km in winter. Mix of motorway, rural and urban

At the moment getting about 200km realistic range. Think I may need to change to something else. Destination charging may be an option but don't want to depend on it in the event it does not work etc. Looking at maybe a hyundai Kona, tesla model 3. Leaf is a 192.

    Thanks

We bought an MG4 in March. Charged it last night to 80% and range is showing as 409km. Obviously you can knock a bit off that but certainly good for 380km or so. It’s the 64kw model.

Anything from a 58kwh hr battery you find in the ID3/Cupra Born upwards will do that journey. Only exception to that would be the 71kwh original etron 50, that would struggle

Tesla is a great suggestion by you if you like the cars

Bit of a vague question, as said by Buddy Bubs, most cars with 58kwh+ batteries will do that fine.
I've an MG4 LR and get 350km in winter, about 430km at the moment. The standard range version would be plenty for your needs too.

What kind of budget do you have and what size car do you need?

Thanks for all the comments. Budget is approx 10k with Leaf as a trade in.

What will you get for your Leaf?

I am not sure to be honest, have requested a price from 2 dealers as a trade in for a tesla

is your round trip 132km or 264km, think its 264km but kinda confusing from your first post

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭SharkMX

Might be better off trying to sell it privately.

    Apologies, yes uts 264km

Hyundai Ioniq 38kwh should achieve 264km in almost all conditions? Will you get one for 10k + Leaf?……I say yes:

I'd of thought the 38kWh was a bit too close to the edge for a dependable 264km evdb is giving it a realistic range of 250km. I think it would cause some difficulties in cold wintery weather.

Agree, especially since my Leaf is a 40kw. I could look at destination charging but for that distance on motorway I would like to be cruising along at 120kph. My Leaf would struggle so just looking at options and it really looks like a used 2020 tesla model 3 is the way to go. Thanks

A few other things to consider - buy a car that is comfortable to sit in for that journey.

Model 3 would be low on my list in that regard - I find the seats both sweaty and too easy to slide around on, and the ride way too harsh, but active cruise control and lane centering are very big plusses you should be looking for, and use. It's a long time to spend in the car and it a moment of distraction is more likely the more you drive.

I'm not a fan of the seat geometry and position of the steering wheel on the Leaf either.

Secondly, you'll be putting big miles on it - so buy something which has had a healthy chunk of depreciation, but balance that against the warranty milage/time limit, as value will likely drop a chunk the minute you're out of warranty.

It may be better to suffer depreciation of a newer car over time, than be hit with that loss of value anyway when the warranty expires.

Thanks, very good points. What would you consider a comfortable ev. Had tesla in my head due to range but have not had one. Was even looking at a cupra born which has 0% finance from new but depreciation wud be huge for mileage I would be doing.

A 2019 Kona 64 will likely have better range (if range crucial) than a 2020 Tesla SR and a lot cheaper

+1 on the Kona, easily cover that range no matter the conditions or speed you'll bedoing. Also no issue with comfort, recently did 800km journey in about 10 hours inc 2 stops for charging & eating - no issue with the comfort.

Try the Model 3 for yourself. Most comfortable car I have ever driven and I have a chronic back injury and a decent list of previous cars behind me, including FTOs, an E46 318 and an E200k. 20-30 minutes in most cars and I start to get lower back pain. Hours at a time in the Model 3 and not a bother. Great support and seating position. I'm 6ft tall and found the kona to be very stiff and tight when I sat in one.

    Stay Free

    Hi

Are you happy with Mg4, getting a price tomorrow for same as yours. Have you had any issues so far.

Looks and feels like a great car.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,238 ✭✭✭Patser

Liking my MG4 a lot so far - is a great car to drive, decent amount of space, good build quality - 15 months on no repairs, squeaks, trim fallen off.

The Lane Keep Assist remains a bit of a bug bear, can be a bit strong pushing you into lane but that's about only gripe left

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 351 ✭✭pete6296

Can you turn it off or do you have to switch it off everytime you drive. Is it easy to do this. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,238 ✭✭✭Patser

You have to turn it off each time, and currently involves a few presses of buttons on screen - but have seen pictures from UK online of a software update that has a quick drop down

Had a Kona before. Had to get rid of it. The boot is tiny. Looks bigger than it actually is. So if you ever want to go on a road trip leave the Kona off your list.
