so - discussion at the weekend..

A buddy claims that if someone wants to be added to a group then they have to ask the admin - and not someone who is already in the group.. said that this is the norm!.. ??

I thought this odd - if I was admin I would have no prob adding someone if asked via a 2nd party..

    What say ye?

I agree with you. I see nothing wrong with passing on someone’s details to be added to the group. Don’t see why you’d have to go through the admin.

Usually the admin is the person who set up the group to begin with. They are usually the only one with access rights to add people to the group.

Which keeps the integrity of the group.

Otherwise you could potentially have members adding all their mates who have no "business" in the group.

I thought for a second there that the etiquette thread regulars here were about to start a WhatsApp group

They could then post pictures of their deposits 🤢 🤢 😂 😂

not saying that all members of the group could add others - I'm saying that people shud be able to request to be added to the group by admin via someone already in the group - as per my op

Admin should have final say or else it be free for all.

The WhatsApp for our residents and we’ve had a girl recently asking for two friends of hers to be added… a husband and wife who moved out of the area about 10 months ago….ex neighbours of hers and ours. Herself is a chatterbox…

They were added but the reasoning “ they’d like to still keep in touch with everyone and the goings on in the area “…. The admin is quite strict yet polite to people keeping the group from lighting up everyone’s phones with social chatter… it’s friendly but businesslike….share your info, ask your question whatever but no idle chatter… give a heads up, share an idea, proffer a solution…which is fair and appropriate etiquette….

When people aren't part of the group anymore yet stay in the chat. Some of them just lurk. The admin should remove them.

Yeah but that person will ultimately have to go to the admin and request for the addition of the person.

It's not a big thing, I've asked admins to add people to some groups I'm in as obviously I already have the connection between both parties.

I'd say whoever told them to contact the admin either didn't want the hassle /didn't want to get involved/ didn't think the person should be in the group so didn't want any part of it / was ultimately stepping back and letting admin deal with it.

Like everything it comes down to the players involved. More than universal hard fast rules!

you hit the nail on the head I think - she didn't want the person in question to be added..

GDPR: the admin should get the person's permission before using their data.
