First of all, I’m an idiot.

I didn’t have my insurance displayed. Insured by Liberty insurance so they send out the insurance disk and you have to print it out yourself. No excuse, colour printer at work. The guard wouldn’t look at my online insurance certificate on my phone.

If I bring the disk with me tomorrow I can get my car back, €125 release fee.

Will I get points on my licence for this would you know?

something not adding up here, Gardai can check if car is insured remotely as they now have access to the insurance database.

Yeah the disc in the window shouldn't be needed anymore. Well I don't need a disc on my motorcycle, so I don't know why they just don't use the same for cars.

Exactly, non display of the disk is a 60 euro fine. The guards are supposed to be able to check insurance on an app, so why impound the car as well. In this day and age a release fee of 125 euro probably does not cover the costs of impounding the car.

yeah, pulled over at a checkpoint. There was a hotel I could have pulled into in advance if I’d wanted to.

The previous year’s disk was in the car.

Car was insured since mid Feb, 2024.

I probably didn’t help my case that I was like a rabbit caught in headlights when they were talking to me,

“Do you have insurance”

“I must have”. The thing is at that moment in time if they asked me to confirm my name probably would have stuttered.

“Do you or don’t you”. I had, but under the gaze of two gardai and backed up traffic I suddenly wasn’t 100% sure. Why didn’t I have the disk on the car. It’s only after I was on the side of the road I realised that the reason.

I was also on the way to my deceased father’s house to sort out his affairs. Mind was elsewhere, but surreal to find myself on the side of the road with my car impounded.

Didn’t finish my thought process to ask them why they didn’t check the system to see if insured there and then.

Are you saying because my car was impounded even though I was insured?

I’m very interested in this because if that’s the case I won’t be happy with the Garda.

What I’m saying is 💯 % true. But, you’ve accused me of being a troll. At least have the courtesy to point out why you think that.

I got pulled over. I walked up to the hotel, collected my thoughts and walked back to the Garda. But, thanks for asking the question.

I’m on the way to the Garda station now (wife is driving). I’d really appreciate as much info about gardai being able to check on the spot my insurance status.

got pulled at a checkpoint last year, didn't have current insurance disk displayed (my own fault, I forgot to print it off). Garda was happy to let me go when I showed him the emailed receipt as proof of cover. He could have hit me with a fine for non-display but I must have an honest face :)

Must have been a right prick of a Garda to impound the car - they have the power to do so if you have no tax or insurance but the fact that you were insured and offered proof of cover suggests he was in the wrong.

The Garda was non plussed. Just brought him in to talk to him.

The Garda I was talking to seemed surprised, but is ringing the guard at another station to find out more.

Garda stopped me and I didn’t have it displayed either…maybe 2 months or so after the insurance had started…I said I’m insured with 123.ie and forgot to print it out. She said she was with them too and that it easily happens and then she waved me on. The result in your case seems a bit OTT

so, met a lovely sergeant here. The car is still on top of a truck, and they are bringing it to the Gardai station in about 10 mins. No fine or fee.

It has probably ended up costing them more seizing it

Could be you just got a power trip egotistical Garda that day that didn't like you, they are out there

Once insured even without the disc displayed you should be let off, usually just drop your insurance in the next few days to your nearest Garda station or have on your phone a copy

would be handy to remember your login for your insurance company account (if you have one); if my insurance disc was missing, i guess i could log in to my allianz account and show them there's an active policy listed there?

And under this new No Plate Recognition system can the guards also see if a driver is a full or learner permit driver along with the other stuff?

the number plate can't tell them who's driving the car, plus i think it's a result of an agreement with the insurance companies and the gardai.

it definitely cost them. I paid nothing and the pick up company will need to be paid.
