This is also gonna normalise people viewing autism as something that needs to be cured. Outdated viewpoints with no actual scientific basis. If I heard the US were looking into researching phrenology it wouldn't surprise me at this stage.

Pakistan and India have to appear to be strong when dealing with each other but don't want to go to war.

Hence lots of tit-for-tat and then returning to the status-quo.

They used Trump as an excuse to de-escalate without loosing face.

Yemen , the US and Israel tag team, they take it in turns.

The owners of the music (Springsteen or a record company) have put the song up for sale. Reagan/Trump have 'bought it' and there's nothing that can be done about it (a cease&desist letter is meaningless) other than making sure they pay the often hefty rights fee for public use.

Don't release your music commercially if you are worried about who might buy it.

The idea that somehow the Catholic Church would be in favour of a deranged eugenicist project aimed at the handicapped is just bizarre. Its Kristi Noem's project not the Church's Incidentally, Noem belongs to a Protestant church, just in case you are interested.

    Enough of the slurs.

Let's be clear, what the RCC considers unacceptable in one country may be an active money maker for the church in another country. Jane Russell is famous for publicly saying she was going to buy an Irish white baby.

What's to say there aren't RCC institutions doing the exact same thing now. The papal doctrine of discovery was a license for ethnic cleansing.

You just seem desperate to shut down criticism of the RCC honestly.

I'd forgotten that, Springsteen sold his entire music rights for more than $500 million to Sony Music Entertainment in late 2021.

Must have been a bad harvest that year.

    Not quite.

    It works like this.

    • The composer of a song owns the performance rights.
    • A musician wishing to record the song needs a licence to record the song from the composer
    • A political campaign (or supermarket, or dentist's waiting room, or whatever) wishing to play the recording needs a licnce both from the composer and from the performer of the recording they wish to play.

Composers and performers are free to sell their rights to others, in which case if you wish to perform the song, or play a recording of it, you need a licence from whoever it is who has bought the rights.

The rights don't last for ever — they expire after a set number of years, after which you can perform/play to your heart's content.

This would be unworkable, were it not for the fact that rightsholders — composers, performers, people who have bought or inherited rights — typically appoint a performing rights organisation (PRO) to manage their rights for them. So I can go to a PRO and buy a licence to play a large package of musical works, the rights to which belong to clients of the PRO. I pay a single fee for this, which is divvied up between all the rightholders, based on a complex formula that the PRO works out.

So, PROs offer a variety of licences suited to different circumstances. If you're a supermarket and you want to play classic popular music 16 hours a day in all your branches, there's a licence for a package of musical works that will suit you. If you're a dentist who want to play light classical music in your waiting room, there's a different licence. (It will cost much less.) The costs of the licence depend on a number of factors, but mainly (a) the number and nature of the works included in the packagem (b) the size of the audience you will be playing it to and (c) whether your purpose is commercial or not.

A political campaign needs "a political entities licence" which, depending on how much you pay, allows you play works included in the licence package (a) at rallies and meetings, or (b) in ads.

But one of the terms of the agreement by which rightsholders appoint a PRO to manage their rights is usually a clause which allows the rightsholder to withdraw a work from a political entities licence. An artist might withdraw their works from all political entities licences, if they don't want to be seen as political or associated with politics, or they can just withdraw their works from a specific licence to a campaign that they do not support, or do not wish to be seen to support. The artist can do this even after the political entities licence has been granted.

So the Trump campaign might buy a licence to a package of songs including, e.g. Born to Run, but at any point the rightsholders of Born to Run can withdraw their permission for the political campaign to use that particular song and, once the political campaign has been notified of this, they no longer have the right to use Born to Run. They know that this is a possiblity at the time they buy the licence (or, at least, they know it if they bother to read the licence terms before signing and paying).

It can also happen that a political campaign transgresses by using a work in a way that exceeds the terms of their licence (e.g. they have a licence to play it at meetings, but they use it in a television ad) or by using a work which is not included in any licence that they have.

That’s fairly typical of the attitude about autism in much of the US, even by well known charities. It’s seen as a problem that needs to be fixed. The focus is put on the parents who have to deal with a difficult child, rather than accommodating the autistic person themselves.

@Peregrinus bloody hell that's convoluted. Thanks for the explanation.

No. this is a thread about the Trump regime, and I fail to see why the Catholic Church should be dragged into this abomination coming from Kristi Noem. It all sounds like a typical MAGA distraction tactic.

Yagan, you say: What's to say there aren't RCC institutions doing the exact same thing now. The papal doctrine of discovery was a license for ethnic cleansing.

If you have evidence for this in the contemporary church, please provide it. If you want to go back decades or centuries to point out past wrongs, that's fine. But don't confine youself to just one institution.

Pay attention to the apologies from the RCC then, especially the recent one in Canada.

The RCC have a history helping people make the unwanted disappear, even making a business out of it.

In Ireland you could call it domestic rendition.

Holy heck that video is bad. What is their aim besides scaremongering?

Softening people up for the internment of autistic children by pretending they have some serious, scary, debilitating illness

    That is so fcuking scary.

It's worth pointing out that Autism Speaks is a hate group that's been peddling misinformation for decades. This isn't some case of them just getting it wrong, they're actively malevolent.

Autism Speaks try to distance themselves from it nowadays but the damage was done. They still support ABA which is basically the autism form of gay conversion therapy, both invented by the same group!

The U.S. is going to need to make up the shortfall of foreign agricultural labour somewhere. I had thought it might be some form of rebranded Kafala system whereby foreign workers sign contracts that amount to a period of indentured servitude, but rounding up addicts, autistic people or other domestic 'undesirables' and forcing them to pick cotton could be another option.

Suggesting it could just as easily be a feint. A highball opening gambit so that the resulting compromise seems relatively reasonable despite being insane also.

Nice to know the Trump people on AF1 flying home from the Middle-East to the US will have to put up with a ranting boss after a 7-2 SCOTUS decision announced yesterday to turn down his deportation order bids and return the issue to the lower courts again. He thanked Justices Alito and Thomas for attempting to protect the US.

How to attack the decision of the other 7 members of SCOTUS without mentioning them by name. Constitution [again] 1 - Trump zero.

I really wouldn't put anything past this administration. Remember, this is Trump's second term. Even if he runs again, he'll have spent three years uniting the opposition against him. He has nothing to lose at this point and he's surrounded himself with nothing but trash like the Project 2025 brigade and worthless flunkies.

Immigration will fall even if the administration doesn't curb it. Who wants to live somewhere teetering on the edge of becoming the fourth Reich? Heck, he's even helped bring Germany to the point where it's going to have the largest army in Europe.

It's hard to separate signal from noise at the best of times. There's certainly enough hate, venality and stupidity here to suggest there's fire behind the smoke. RFK Jr looks at austistic people with nothing more than contempt.

Sad to say, that because of one person and one person alone, that this could be up for discussion at all, but there we are. Hopefully his blathering on will eventually stick in enough craws in the US that they will revolt against him and depose him.
