That he’s an ex marine doesn’t put him on team normal for me either though: it was an ex marine who once told me, in 2016, of his ideations to shoot Bernie Sanders between the eyes, viewing the Senator as a “domestic enemy” he argued was consistent with his merchant mariner oath.

It's about who Trump thinks will do what Mike Pence wouldn't. He will expect unwavering loyalty and give none in return, once Vance or anyone says or does something he doesn't like then he will get Penced.

The first question in the debate should be why Pence isn't the VP pick.

Judge Cannon apparently threw out the documents case as the original law allowing for the appointment of Special Counsels lapsed a few years back. The judge said the power to appoint them is with Congress. Jack Smyth was appointed by AG Garland, and not Congress, to the job using his own [executive] authority, as was Robert Hur to investigate President Biden.

If Judge Cannon is correct, then the GOP may face a problem with their demands that the Hur investigation documents be turned over the Senate. Mr Hur's investigation [including all the paperwork it produced and gathered] would have the status of being gathered without lawful power. It might as well consist of shredded paper.

AG Garland could probably lawfully order the destruction of all the document gathered by the Hur investigation in the light of Judge Cannon's ruling as unlawfully gathered material best made safe from unlawful activity. As for the subpoenas from Congress to Garland to turn over the Hur investigation documents and its threat to charge Garland with contempt of congress, that might be voided as ridiculous as Hur's work has no legal standing, thanks to Judge Cannon's ruling.

Vance is a good solid target for Dems to rail against. He's a spoofer and a hypocrite, not unlike his new boss. But he is a lot smarter than Trump.

Biden will have it explained to him that the bullet which made Trump a living martyr, was indeed the sign from "God himself" that he needs to step back.

Only a young democratic ticket of mixed-gender, mixed-race and a strong socially liberal, fiscally responsible ethos can beat Trump now.

Personally I'd nominate Gretchen Whitmer for POTUS and Gavin Newsom for VP tomorrow, but given the logistics, it really has to be Harris, in which case I'd match her with Joseph P. Kennedy III on the ticket.

If nothing else, Vance means a lot of articles about the impact of facial hair in politics in the forthcoming months.

Imagine a Vance-Harris debate would be a fairly tame occurrence.

But will evangelicals be even more whipped up by the idea that surviving an attempt means God is protecting Trump? I'm finding it very hard to be optimistic about the election. I really hope I'm wrong but I think a rapist might get into power, bury multiple cases against himself, get two more appointed to SCOTUS, stop aid to Ukraine etc. etc.

Please persuade me otherwise.

I'm perfectly aware how PResidential elections work, but we still don't know who Trump is running against.

I like Vance, I am vaguely aware that was vocally opposed to the Trump election bid and during the earlier part of his administration, but he did a 180 degree turn, and I've no issue with that, I went through a similar 180 degree turn. We aren't on our won, Trump got 10 million more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016. I would describe Trump as an unfortunate necessity, and history will be much kinder to him than what many are willing to admit.

I'd also imagine the Trump campaign are very familiar with what Vance has said in the past, I hardly doubt a few posters on Boards are more informed than the 45th about his VP Pick.

You think there are MAGA folk out there, that haven't been whipped up into a frenzy over trump's legal woes and constant emails looking for more money, but will be now that a republican took a pot shot at him?

He has "energised" his base as much as he possibly can.

What he needed to do was tone down the rhetoric, pick a person for VP that would win him strategic ground and it was there for the taking. That might have won him some independents. Hell, even Haley would have gotten him a few percent.

But no. Between now and the election he will ramp things up even more and that, along with abortion and his convictions should be enough to get biden over the line.
