Well said. MM would be an arrogant and prickly FF politician. However he appeared meek, weak and subservient beside Trump yesterday. I doubt that has happened too often but it was the correct approach.

In a way he can thank Zelensky. After his mauling, MM probably went in a lot less combative. He may not be overly proud of his sometimes cringey performance but needs must. Some of the other leaders in the EU might perceive that he didn't defend the EU much but we shall see.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

But did Trump even say thank you once?

Without assistance from a certain Irish-produced pharmaceutical he wouldn't have been able to cheat on his wife over the past two decades!

MSNBC social media channels commenting on yesterdays interactions spoke of it in the same way as Starmer and Macron and referred to Trump having now being correct by 4 foreign leaders who he has hosted in the Oval Office.

I think the EU, (and the UK) will feel Micheal did very well to not upset the unification that is being presented from this side of the Atlantic in the face of Trump belligerence.

After what Trump did to Zelensky every European leader, bar Orban, knows visiting Trumps lair is just giving Trump an opportunity to entertain his MAGA base, so one will be too prickly about us honouring a tradition built on generations of emigration.

Sure what word does the US use when the president-elect is taking over the administration of Govt from the outgoing president except presidential transition?

The American media had absolutely no interest in the meeting and barely reported on it judging by the 2 outlets I read last night.

That's the funny thing about Martin's critics in the irish media this morning, they don't seem to acknowledge that outside of the Irish media sphere it didn't provide any traction.

It wasn't "good TV" which is absolutely the best outcome we could hope for from a national stage point of view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,476 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

It wasn't even mentioned on CNN or NBC apps. I guess it was probably referenced throughout the day. But nothing stuck.

Like it never happened, complete non event.

I only caught the end of the meeting.

I liked how MM complimented Trump on being the only US president to have invested privately in Ireland after Trump had been ranting about the evils of US companies investing overseas.

"And finally, to celebrate the upcoming St. Patty's Day, President Trump took some questions in the company of the owner of Irelands biggest tea shop. Boy, they sure do love their tea over there. Now, over to Pete with the sports."

Given what is going on in the US at the moment, is it surprising that a regular, routine, and as it turned out, uncontrovertial event with a small country would even cause a ripple? If it had actually been on St Patrick's day it would probably have got a mention as part of the celebrations, and it might yet, but otherwise, non-event.

Which is 100% a success. Although I did see it commented on on social media challenges of a couple of the US networks. And those comments didn't suggest anything that MM wouldn't be happy to see said about it.

4 more years of Trump News, I might have to turn it off, it’s making me sick but I’m also addicted to the poison

I completely tuned out for his first term as I looked at it being a blip of the social media age overtaking party politics, but his reelection meant our relationship with the USA had definitely shifted if a substantial portion of the US population knew beyond doubt that they wanted more narcissistic chaos.

it really feels like we are living through a history that people will read about and go “what the actual fucckk was going back then, were they all mad?”.

    In other trump news..

    IMG_20250313_112941_580.jpg

Texas mega-church and former Trump 'spiritual' adviser Robert Morris has been indicted for molesting a 12 year old girl.

What is about the republican party in the US that so many of them are into sex crimes?

And why do they repeatedly say that drag queen story time and transgender people are dangerous to women and children while repeatedly putting their children into the care of religious sexual predators and try to "keep their women under control" via use of the bible?

Surely at this stage with the sheer volume of child rape and sexual assault committed by those involved in the Republican party in the US, they're a greater threat to women and children?

I suppose when you look at the history of organised religion, sexual abuse and rape of children are par for the course in all of them, it's little surprise a cult as big as MAGA would have the same.

Yeah the first term completely passed me by. I took zero interest in it and never posted about it. Apart from Boards, I am only on LinkedIn so the social media aspect never intruded. Americans on the whole are a bit dim and are easily fooled.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

That put the Uncle Mo scene in the Senate hearing from Succession in my head.

The 'Mehole' crowd are a dose. It's not the person they are trying to belittle. Just how they're making little of our own language, how dim they are, as dim as the worst American MAGA, and the fact that saying it stopped being funny 10 years ago.

Thankfully our PR system makes it hard for divisive binary politics to dominate, but our last election was the lowest turnout since the 1920s so we may get blindsided yet.

He's now threatening 200% tariffs on EU alcohol imports in retaliation for the EU tariff on US bourbon which was in response to the Trumps initial tariffs on EU steel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,731 ✭✭✭✭looksee

I suspect he does not really understand what 200% tarrifs means. Its just a nice round number.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,473 ✭✭✭Lewis_Benson

I suspect he doesn't know what a lot of things mean.

He only cares about what makes him look good at any given moment.

He doesn't look to the future, only cares about what's going on in front of him right now

And he still has no idea what tarrifs are.

I hope the EU take a leaf out of Canada's book and play hardball back.

Easy tariff for a guy who doesn't drink alcohol.

It might annoy his scotch and champagne drinking buddies though 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,745 ✭✭✭yagan

He says this will be great for US producers who are already struggling with ICE raids.

A rant which demonstrates that he shouldn't be even trusted with a remote control.

He truly is a national embarrassment on a daily basis.
