Is my tree dead?

Hi

Is this tree dead, or is there anything we can do for it?

Very little leaves on it compared to usual.

The roots have started to protrude the last year or so.

The roots are rising looking for moisture. The tree is in a dry sheltered corner to begin with and then it seems to have a membrane of some sort round the base. Clear the way to actually allow water get to the tree. If there's some life left it may come back.

Ah, there's a sheeting under the stones to stop weeds. Should I take that up to let water get in?

The membrane looks like a tonne sand sack or similar, if you want to reduce weeds use the proper stuff, it lets water though. Though better use mulch of some sort.

How did it flower last year?

I would advise pulling back the tonne bag see if the ground is hard and dry or damp before you water it.

Cherry Blossoms often have shallow roots, but no leaves would say to me that it might be too wet in that area, is it typically damp down there?
