BREAKING: A helicopter carrying Iran's president Ebrahim Raisi has had a "hard landing", Iranian state television reported"

President Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

State TV described the area of the incident happening as being near Jolfa, a city on the border with Azerbaijan.

Rescue teams are trying to reach the accident site.

helicopter travel is a risky mode of transport. Throw in mountainous terrain and changes in weather and the risk of things going bad gets higher.

"Hard landing" was probably chosen to downplay the seriousness of what has happened.

In reality, it is probably a full-blown helicopter crash due to poor weather in mountainous terrain.

yeah, with hard landing, I was thinking maybe engine failure and auto rotate, but then with footage of fog, could very well be weather related. Any word on model/type of aircraft.

Yes I understand. I have no gra for this guy either. I was just framing this event, with my not good news comment in the OP in relation to the current geopolitical situation in that region. Certain actors in all this will no doubt try to pin this on Israel or US etc ..

Doesn't matter if Israel did it or not.

If it was something small they'd blame Israel and the US and threaten retaliation regardless of the cause, but this is big so they won't blame them.

Same as the drone strike against Iran's missile site, they didn't blame it on Israel even when it was very obviously them following Iran's earlier attack. They downplayed the damage and the attack and blamed some nameless small group using toys or whatever it was.

Even if they 100% thought it was them they won't, better it thought to be an accident than showing how vulnerable or weak they are.

Some speculating that foul play may possibly have been a cause because the two other helicopters travelling in the same convoy made it back safely. 

Of course, it's all speculation at this point. But it's a legitimate, possible cause (and no, not caused by the Israelis).

If not that, it's possible that there was a technical malfunction involved in tandem with the poor weather, difficult terrain etc.
