with semi auto cf rifle licenses not being handed out anymore what do future laws look like? Will semi auto Rimfires and shotguns be affected next? I highly doubt any law is going to be reverted so they can only get stricter.

How long is a piece of string? Would be a better answer to this question. We can only speculate on this question and unfortunately, only react is something changes. So it is vital that any sort of "blip on the radar" is reported and followed up as much as possible by our organisations.

As to a "Will they go for RF and shotguns next…?" question.Sorry, the ol Crystal Ball is saying nothing. I'm sure they would like to go back to the ol days of the "Idontlikedelookodatnow" legislation where looks alone were a reason for a refusal, and a few Supers are trying this on around the country, Despite a slew of district courts telling them on both rifles and shotguns that looks alone are not an ultimate deciding factor [and there is HC precedent for this from the 1980s], and could they please define what an "assault rifle" looks like to have any sort of case?

Going by the controversial FEC reports of last year the AGS stance is as usual."Ban,and restrict and make life as difficult as possible for anyone who is a gunowner despite us vetting them to the nth degree and use any sort of weak excuse that has no revelance to the Irish situation whatsoever or has criminal connections to tar Irish gunowners as somehow a danger to society if they have access to certain firearms or equipment"IE still making out that the few CF pistols and SACF rifles left post both bans are a threat to society because they are used in mass shootings in Europe and the USA. Implying that silencers found in possession of criminals are somehow a choice item and that your .308 silencers will be of use to a drug dealer with a 9mm Russian Markov planning on bumping off his rivals. Also, as silencers are treated as firearms in themselves as our legislation, shouldn't they have the calibres to hand of those recovered from criminals?Doubt many of them are for .22,308 or 223 or 270.

So in the end all I can say is "watch the Skies" and be prepared for anything that might happen I think they all realised that with the FEC this is a large tin of worms in a Pandoras box that like most things firearms-related in Ireland is not one to be opened carelessly and best can kicked down the road if you value your political career,as Mr J Brown [FF] of Wexford is going to find out in the next 12 months.

If you want something that you think might be banned or could conceivably be banned in the future, get it now...

My signature is all the response I think is needed, along with concurring with the previous responses.

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

S.I. No. 187/1972 - Firearms (Temporary Custody) Order - Firearms seized

S.I. No. 21/2008 - Firearms (Restricted Firearms and Ammunition) Order 2008 - Firearm types restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009 - Firearms banned & grandfathered

S.I. No. 420/2019 - Magazine ban, ammo storage & transport restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023 - 2023 Firearm Ban (retroactive to 8 years prior)

    Hello,

I really hate seeing discussion threads like this - why? - because they just attract a lot of pessimistic responses.

Why not take a different approach, a different way of thinking about this, and ask - what can decent, law abiding, and careful, citizens do, to stop being victimised, and discriminated against ?

While there's regular gun crime, or illegal gun seizures, in Ireland - it almost never relates to those who hold licensed firearms, relevant insurance etc.

So, why not start pressing for equality, applying pressure on those in political positions, that discriminate against us, with no good reason - and even try to vote them out of power?

There are Local and European elections coming up this year, with National elections due next year - so use your vote, and let's start standing up for ourselves!

    Thanks,

    G.

The question is , who are "they" who want to abolish private firearms ownership in Ireland? There is no cohesive group per se unlike the US or Germany where there are groups like Every Town for gun safety or Million morons…Sorry Momsfor gun control, who have advocated gun ban policy based on "common sense gun controls" and have crackpot Senators in their payrolls. We have more anti hunting and fieldsport groups like ICABS,ARAN & Co who would be glad to see the end of shooting game, but they are not political groups and as such might have the odd politican of any political hues here"supporting " them if the wind is fair for a political opportunity, but outright gun banners I could only find four and they are out of the game or in the no-hopers,or monster raving loony party league to be of major concern to us. People like "I'll smoke if I want in the Dail! It's my Right!" John Deasey or Dermot Aherne or Eamon O Snoddigh of SF or whats his head who claimed a shotgun blasted northern Ireland road sign was in his North Dublin constituency and was put in his box by Sparks in the Dail public hearing are all gone and retired or have trousered enough cash from the patriot game.

Still,it is good that when this new shower of rascals darkens our doors to hit them with a ready list of questions on gun-ownership in Ireland,so we can call them out if they change their coats on the issue in future statements or policies?Or am I naive in thinking there might be such a creature as an Irish politician with principles? I'd have more respect for anyone even if they were totally anti-gun and hunting and stuck to their belifs and principles on the issue, than trying to run with the hares and hunt with the hounds.
